The Sculpture Tech Specialist will work closely with SDS faculty to develop and maintain facilities and equipment as it relates to programming in the Sculpture Dimensional Studies (SDS) Division within the School of Art and Design at The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

The primary responsibilities are to support and implement efficient studio operations which involve working with SDS faculty, technicians, students, and University staff (including Professors, Adjuncts, Graduate Teaching Assistants, Students, Work Study, Visiting Artists, other Studio Technicians, Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities and Grounds staff). Responsibilities include research, planning and installation of new equipment, maintenance and repair of existing equipment as well as facilitating the design and fabrication of new systems to specific spaces. The Sculpture Tech Specialist will assist in the demonstration of proper and safe use of equipment to students and others in collaboration with Faculty. They will oversee other technical staff to develop, and implement, safe operation of SDS facilities, use of equipment and proper handling of materials (i.e; fire codes, MSDS, chemical storage and disposal, etc). Facilities of oversight include metal fab shop, metal casting foundry, plaster and wax working areas, fiber mixed-media studio, sculpture galleries, sculpture classroom and SDS Studio Spaces. This is a full time 12 month position, eligible for overtime for hours worked over 40 in a week.

Requirements:
  • Education:
    • Preferred: Master of Art Degree (MFA) with two years of related experience and/or training.
    • Bachelor's degree (B. A.), required, with four years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Forklift Operation (preferred: can be trained at Alfred)
  • Language Skills
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from faculty, visiting artists, techs, students and the general public. Ability to understand, interpret, and communicate policies, procedures, information, ideas, and instructions effectively to a wide range of skill levels, personalities, and backgrounds.
  • Mathematical Skills
    • Ability to track budget, calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning Ability
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer Skills
    • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Trello. Knowledge of h ow to print documents and the use of different platforms and apps is also required. Familiarity with CAD software is a plus. Communication by email is a must.
