The mission of the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality is to continuously reduce preventable harm, improve patient outcomes, and enhance the value and equity of care around the world by advancing the science of patient safety and quality through discovery, implementation, education, evaluation, and collaborative learning. The Senior Instructional Designer leads work groups in developing learning experiences. S/he will work collaboratively with the JHU faculty, subject matter experts, external partners and instructional design staff to design, develops, and deliver traditional, fully online and blended courses, as well as technology-enhanced instructional materials in support of this mission.
Specific duties and responsibilities- Collaborates with the Learning and Development team to further the strategic goals of the Learning and Development Department and the Armstrong Institute.
- Designs, develops, and may help deliver grant and contract-funded instructional projects.
- Advises AI faculty and staff on effective use of instructional resources for specific projects.
- Conducts needs analysis and performance analysis to develop learner-centered experiences.
- Collaborates with faculty in writing instructional design criteria for grant and contract proposals.
- Working in partnership with subject matter experts (e.g., Armstrong Institute faculty and staff), develops design documents and/or storyboards outlining instructional objectives , methods , and assessment plans.
- Develops project management plans or works with project management leads to ensure that quality deliverables are produced to meet project timelines
- Executes on instructional design plans, using visual design skills and multimedia development skills, to develop engaging and effective learning experiences (online, face-to-face, or print).
- Learns to be a proficient user of the LearnShare LMS.
- Conducts usability and learnability analysis of learning prototypes and environments.
- Working with the Learning and Development team, conducts
formative and summative evaluation of instructional content and
outcomes.
- Working with the Instructional Design Program Manager, develops program and curriculum summaries for Armstrong Institute leadership.
- May mentor or direct other instructional designers, content specialists, web developers, graphic designers, AI faculty and staff, and/or external partners as needed in complex projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduate Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, education, or related field.
- Three years of professional level experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
- Significant additional related experience may substitute for advanced degree.

This job requires a person who is a self-starter, who sets goals for herself/himself and members of the teams s/he may lead, develops strategies for meeting them, and achieves them with minimal oversight.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate teams of high level professionals (including faculty, staff and other technical specialists) from multiple departments in design, development, and execution of funded projects.
- Ability to deal with multiple constituencies in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
- Excellent presentation skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment and willing to contribute wherever needed to ensure team success.
