This role is responsible for all aspects of the Scientific Computing & Imaging (SCI) Institute’s finance and accounting functions in addition to proposal development and grants and contract administration.

Core responsibilities of the role include the following: developing and implementing institute and grant budgets, financial planning, team organization, and directing all aspects of accounting, finance and spending tracking.

Expert knowledge of grants and contracts management, pre- and post-award services, UU policy interpretation and recommendations, invoicing, payroll, purchasing, budgeting, forecasting, expense control, fiscal reporting and allocations. The position requires familiarity with determining earned value or other methods to reliably calculate project burn rates when compared to project budgets.

The role serves as a liaison between SCI and colleges, academic departments, UU central administration, state and federal government agencies and industry grant sponsors. Maintains a professional working relationship with the School of Computing, and the College of Engineering.

WORK SCHEDULE: Full-Time, Day

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions 

1. Meet with Director on a weekly basis to discuss the financial status of SCI. 

2. Meet with the Office of the Director (Administration, IT) to compare the individual SCI unit budgets to actual expenditures and making changes to spending plans accordingly. 

3. Meet with faculty members on a regular basis to discuss existing grant budgets and to anticipate future project budgets and plans. 

4. Overseeing the accounting surrounding the SCI Institute’s Computing Recharge center and preparing annual reports as required by the University’s Office of Compliance 

5. Forecasting and budget planning for the overall SCI Institute budget including updating the University’s EPM budgeting system and drafting the Budget Narrative in preparation for the Institute’s annual budget meeting with the Senior Vice President for Research’s Office 

8. Supervising the SCI finance and accounting team 

9. Providing guidance to the SCI Institute Administrative staff members on travel reimbursement preparation, other reimbursement requests, and accounting allocations related to such requests 

10. Working with the College of Engineering to gather information for the annual ASEE and FAR reports 

11. Being a liaison between the Institute and the University’s Human Resources in managing various personnel topics 

10. Interpreting policies and recommending internal controls 

11. Preparing financial reports and other ad hoc reports as requested by faculty 

12. Answering policy questions and resolving accounting related issues as they arise 

13. Forecasting, developing and implementing policies and procedures in the areas of accounting for grants and contracts that are consistent with Sponsor and University of Utah’s policies 

14. Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships 

15. Reviews and approves all purchasing requisitions, eProposal, and eAward requests 

16. Performs preliminary contract negotiations with outside funding agencies and corporate sponsors

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.
