Assistant Professor in Music Theory

Full-time, 9-month, tenure-accruing faculty position

Date of Expected Hire: August 16, 2023

Salary: $62,000 - $64,000. Negotiable based on qualifications and experience. Eligible for comprehensive, highly competitive benefits package.

The University of Florida School of Music invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time position in Music Theory. We seek a colleague who will play an essential role in a theory program that serves the school of music broadly, enriching the study of performance, composition, and musicology. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach courses at all levels of our music theory curriculum, from building foundations for undergraduate students in the music theory sequence to offering graduate seminars in topics on the cutting edge of the field. The candidate’s area of specialization is open but should complement current strengths in our program. The successful candidate will play an integral part in future revisions to the theory curriculum and should be knowledgeable in innovative approaches to curriculum design and theory pedagogy.

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses including but not limited to courses in the undergraduate music theory/aural skills sequence, Analytical Techniques, Pedagogy of Music Theory, and graduate theory seminars

  • Supervise undergraduate honor projects and graduate theses

SCHOOL OF MUSIC: Organized within the College of the Arts, the School of Music plays an important role in the academic and cultural life of the University, the College’s Creative Campus initiative and the community. The School has 40 full-time and nine adjunct faculty, serving some 200 graduate and 200 undergraduate music majors. Degree programs include B.A., B.M., M.M., D.M.A., and the Ph.D. in music education, composition, ethnomusicology, and historical musicology. Program emphases include performance, music education, theory, composition, music history and literature, ethnomusicology, conducting, and sacred music. The School of Music is also home to the UF Bands program, which includes “The Pride of the Sunshine” Gator Marching Band. Expected Salary:

$62,000 - $64,000. Negotiable based on qualifications and experience. Eligible for comprehensive, highly competitive benefits package.

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Terminal degree

  • Excellence in college-level teaching

  • Evidence of established and active research in the field of music theory

  • Evidence of success in promoting an environment that advances diversity, equity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in supervising student research projects at the undergraduate and graduate levels

  • Experience in curriculum design and development

  • Secondary area of specialization in a related field, such as composition, performance, music technology, or another area.
