Position Description

The Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago seeks applicants for a position as Professor of Practice in the Arts (open rank) expected to begin July 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position includes a teaching load of four courses per year in the department’s film production and/or media arts and design programs, maintaining an active creative agenda in the selected candidate’s area of specialization, and service duties related to the position (e.g. advising BA thesis projects, serving on committees, etc.). The minimum initial term of appointment term is 4 years, and may be longer depending on experience and rank.

 

Qualifications

The position requires a PhD in cinema and media studies or a related discipline; a proven record of filmmaking or work in moving-image media; strong practical knowledge of new media technologies and theories; innovative work in film analysis; and experience teaching at the University level. Preferred qualifications include: Work that is oriented around a documentary and/or experimental tradition; ability to design/code new systems of image capture and/or creation (such as VR); and a demonstrated record of publications, screenings, and other evidence of engagement with both the creative and scholarly sides of moving-image media.

This position is contingent on final budgetary approval. The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union.
