Job Details

Nazareth College of Rochester seeks an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice/Director of the Community Youth Development (CYD) program, which includes the CYD major and minor. Candidates are expected to have a master’s degree in a related field (e.g. Child/Human Development, Psychology, Leadership, Not for Profit Administration, Social Work, Education, or Sociology). Because Nazareth’s CYD program is defined by close partnerships with community organizations, at least five years of experience in a youth development community setting, with at least three years in a leadership capacity, is required, ideally in after school/out of school programs.

CYD rigorously prepares students to provide trauma-informed, culturally-responsive, and whole-child-focused services to children and youth and/or to enter graduate studies in a related field. The program fosters high quality “on the spot” and “in the moment” critical thinking that demonstrates a deep appreciation of the risk and protective factors which impact the social, psychological, cognitive, and spiritual lives of young people. A hallmark of the CYD program is the importance of mindfulness and reflection of the practitioner.

In addition to supporting students’ academic and experiential learning as their academic advisor and professional mentor, the director’s ability to facilitate "brave conversations" related to diversity, equity, and inclusion with students is an essential skill set. Because community-engaged learning is a foundational component of each CYD course, the Community Youth Development Program Director must have collaboration and community-building experience and a willingness to develop relationships in the Rochester community.

The successful candidate will teach three courses (nine credits) each semester in addition to directing the program. The director will report directly to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for the Liberal Arts and Sciences. They will be expected to work collaboratively with departments and divisions at the college, including The Center for Life’s Work (which houses the Internship office) and other academic stakeholders. Administrative duties will include establishing program priorities, scheduling courses, managing budgets, coordinating effective community partnerships, limiting liability, and working with the offices of Strategic Enrollment Management and Marketing and Communication to recruit students.

Faculty in Professional Practice are eligible for promotion from Assistant to Associate and Full Professor ranks. Contracts are yearly, but after seven years of successful service faculty become eligible for three-year contracts and after fifteen years of successful service become eligible for five-year contracts.

The search committee will begin review of the application after December 12, 2022
