The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in the College of Arts and Letters at Old Dominion University invites applications for a Lecturer in Game Development and Game Programming starting July 2023.

Position:

Candidates will teach introductory-level courses in game design and development, intermediate courses in gaming technology, and upper-level courses in game programming and game development using game engines. Candidates will also be able to develop and teach specialized topics courses based on their expertise. Duties will also include service in the IDS Game Design, Development, and Criticism program, including student advising, recruitment, and program development. Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to and shape one of ODU’s newest and rapidly growing majors.

ODU’s IDS Game Design, and Development program offers students a fundamentally entrepreneurial and interdisciplinary approach to game studies and gaming. It seeks to not only teach students the core principles of game development, design, and scholarship, but also help them understand how to adapt these principles in response to changes in technology, the market, or culture.

Minimum requirements

Minimum required qualifications for the position include: (1) an advanced degree in game design and development, or a closely related field and equivalent industry experience; and (2) expertise in the C#, C++, and Python coding languages.

Preferred requirements:

To complement department capabilities, we prefer candidates who have expertise/interest in any one of the following areas:

  • University level teaching experience, or be able to articulate their interest in and qualifications for teaching at the university level
  • Expertise in game AI and the game development pipeline.
  • Project management experience.
  • Expertise in other relevant programming languages

Our ideal candidate would be an expert in game programming and comfortable teaching undergraduate courses.
