The University Libraries at Lenoir-Rhyne University (LRU) seeks applications for the position of Graduate Instruction Librarian for the Center for Graduate Studies of Asheville, North Carolina, beginning some time between January and May, 2023.

General Description/Primary Purpose

The position is a full-time faculty librarian position, primarily serving the faculty and students at Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Asheville Graduate Center but also providing for the needs of other Lenoir-Rhyne graduate students and faculty. This is a hybrid position, so the graduate instruction librarian will work Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Asheville location and Mondays and Wednesdays in Hickory’s Rudisill Library. Fridays can be at either location or even conducted as remote work. It requires a service-oriented librarian who is student-centered, who will actively promote excellence in library services through the proactive development and implementation of innovative instruction and of instructional materials and in-person and virtual reference, and who will support the Graduate Center faculty through the integration of library resources into the curriculum. The Asheville Center faculty, students and staff are served by a virtual rather than print library and by the provision of information literacy and library instruction.

Ideal candidates can demonstrate the following skills and experience: experience in teaching using a variety of pedagogical techniques; creation of instructional and information materials such as online tutorials, and guides; proficiency in providing reference assistance using a wide array of online library resources; knowledge of and use of current information literacy instruction practices; familiarity with online catalogs, electronic library collections, chat services, course-management systems, and social-networking and web-authoring tools.

The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff on the Asheville campus and colleagues at the Hickory and Columbia, South Carolina, campuses. The candidate will demonstrate evidence of both commitment and capacity for teaching excellence, student mentorship, professional engagement, and campus citizenship.

The appointment is continuing, subject to annual review and re-appointment. The librarian is expected to participate in meetings with the University Libraries’ staff on the Hickory and the Columbia campuses and in online and in-person professional development activities. The position will entail evening and some weekend hours.

Specific Job Functions

Instruction and Reference
  • Provide innovative instruction across the graduate curriculum and in a growing distance learning environment via regular collaboration with faculty concerning needs and research focus of courses; integration of digital scholarly resources into on- campus and online courses; use of traditional (in-person, in-class) and new/emerging technologies (online, video instruction) and multi-modal models for information literacy instruction; online instruction utilizing the university’s Canvas course management system; development/integration of online resources and resource guides using LibGuides;
  • Provide effective general and specialized reference and research services to students and faculty for all of the center’s graduate programs, on and off the Asheville campus, via in-person consultations and remote consultations (chat service, email, telephone and text); development of reference aids using a variety of media; use of Interlibrary loan
  • Assess activities that measure and evaluate instruction, reference work, resources and services
  • Provide skills support by:
    • Serving as a Writing Tutor under the direction of the University Writing Center Director
    • Assisting with productivity software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and technology use in general
    • Providing an array of information literacy skills, including (but not limited to): ethical use of information (copyright and plagiarism), information creation (including topic development), and scholarly communication (creating proper citations and using bibliographic management software).
  • In conjunction with Rudisill Library staff, troubleshoot and resolve day-to-day problems with library systems, software and services such as interlibrary loan, chat reference, LibGuides and electronic resources; in conjunction with Appalachian College Association staff, troubleshoot and resolve problems with Innovative ILS software.
  • Assist in marketing library services and resources through use of social media
  • Other duties as assigned, including an expectation to attend regular Rudisill Library staff meetings (some in person on the Hickory campus and others online) and to participate in Library staff retreats, generally held in the summer.
Service and Professional Development
  • Pursue continuing education and professional development activities to strengthen individual competencies, improve library operations, and contribute to the field
  • Fulfill university expectations for campus participation and community service
  • Attend regular Rudisill Library staff meetings (some in person on the Hickory campus and others online) and participates in Library staff retreats
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Education
  • ALA-accredited master’s degree
Experience
  • Minimum of two years’ library experience in reference and in instruction areas
  • Demonstrated teaching experience and familiarity in a variety of pedagogical techniques
  • Proficiency with current reference practices and technologies and with providing reference assistance, using a wide array of online library resources
  • Experience with library instruction and the preparation, design, and maintenance of instructional materials/tutorials in a variety of online formats
  • Experience using current information literacy instruction practices
  • Experience with course management systems, especially Canvas, and with online web authoring platforms, especially LibGuides
  • Experience with using a variety of social media platforms to market library services
  • Excellent knowledge of and experience with office productivity software
  • Excellent verbal, written and spoken communication skills
Other
