Job Summary

The Urban Health Collaborative is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as Deputy Director for Programs and Initiatives, helping to lead, plan, and manage the UHC, and evaluate UHC programs and initiatives. The UHC is a multi-disciplinary research center at the Dornsife School of Public Health, Drexel University, focused on improving health in cities. Launched in 2015 the UHC has grown exponentially and is now internationally recognized for its work to advance urban health, health equity and environmental sustainability in the US and globally. Since its inception the UHC has secured >35 million in external funding, has supported trainees and training activities in urban health, and has partnered with community groups, public health practitioner and urban health networks in the US and globally to advance work to promote urban health. The UHC is committed to advancing an antiracist urban health agenda and ensuring that all its practices and policies advance antiracism and support diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Deputy Director for Programs and Initiatives (DDP) will work closely with the UHC Director and the UHC Steering Committee in developing a programmatic agenda for the UHC. He/she/they will partner with the Deputy Director for Administration, UHC faculty core leads, and UHC Steering committee to implement, coordinate, and evaluate UHC programmatic activities and special initiatives, including activities and programming led by the UHC cores as well as coordination/integration across other UHC externally funded projects, and special initiatives. The DDP will ensure that the UHC is connected to other Dorsnife School of Public Health activities, to Drexel University, and to external academic and non-academic partners. The DDP will work in partnership with the Deputy Director for Administration on operational activities and strategic planning.

The DDPI will create and support a collaborative and inclusive work environment facilitating exchange and collaboration across the UHC (including external funded projects based at the UHC) and with external partners within and outside Drexel University. The position will be based at the UHC and will report to UHC Director Dean Dr. Ana Diez Roux.

Essential Functions

Leadership and planning:
  • Work with UHC leadership to develop a programmatic agenda for the UHC and identify areas for innovation and new initiatives
  • Work with the UHC Director, Deputy Director for Administration, and UHC Steering Committee lead and coordinate updates and implementation of the UHC Strategic Plan in accordance with UHC values, goals, and resources.
  • Identify opportunities within and outside Drexel University for the UHC to advance its mission and objectives, and develop and implement a strategy for these activities
  • Promote and support the development of new partnerships
  • Support creation and meetings of any UHC advisory boards
Program coordination, integration, and evaluation:
  • Oversee, coordinate and assist in implementation of programmatic activities across UHC cores (research and data, training, community and policy) ensuring that there is communication and integration and that synergisms are maximized.
  • Create and support opportunities for interaction across externally funded projects
  • Support the SC in advancing and evaluating antiracism initiatives
  • Oversee Weekly Forum, UHC invited speaker series and UHC day as well as any other cross-UHC activities designed to promote collaboration and exchange
  • Develop, implement and evaluate special UHC initiatives including pilot and working group awards
  • In collaboration with the Deputy Director for Administration, develop and track metrics to monitor strategic plan objectives
  • Develop an annual UHC report for internal and external audiences as well as funders/donors.
  • Lead planning and oversee implementation of the UHC Urban Health symposium or other UHC special events
Fundraising:
  • Identify and assist in responding to external funding opportunities including federal and non-federal grants and contracts
  • Assist in identifying, cultivating and communication with potential donors, develop proposals and solicitations for funding.
External Communications and Marketing:
  • Oversee all external communications and marketing strategies including printed materials, electronic newsletter, website, social media, and special marketing of UHC programming
  • Ensure coordination/integration of external communications across the UHC and with School communications activities
  • Supervise the UHC communications manager
Other:
  • Represent the Director and the UHC as needed within and outside the University on programmatic issues
  • Serve as backup for select project-specific coordination tasks
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Public Health or Related Field or Equivalent
  • Interest and/or experience in issues of urban health, health equity, or environmental sustainability
  • Experience advancing antiracism and diversity/equity and inclusion work in organizations
  • At least 5-8 years of management and supervisory experience in a non-profit, government, or academic setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Leadership skills and advanced organizational and project management skills, including the ability to juggle multiple time sensitive competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with diverse teams and a variety of stakeholders (such as senior leadership, faculty, staff, and students).
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and engage people and influence through leadership and partnership building.
  • Solid analytical skills required with the ability to analyze and interpret information, present clear and concise recommendations and intervene effectively as needed.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to deliver effective presentations.
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest and/or experience in research and/or policy
  • Experience working with trainees such as postdoctoral fellow and students
  • Experience in communications
