Department Statement

Reporting to the Vice president for Equity and Inclusion, the Title IX Coordinator oversees the coordination of training, education and services in support of promoting a culture of respect to create a learning environment and workplace free of sexual or relationship violence, discrimination and harassment. Building collaborative relationships across campus, the Title IX Coordinator is the primary authority for overseeing supportive measures, investigation and resolution of matters arising under Title IX and the University’s policies. This senior position also plays a central role on the University’s discrimination and harassment response team. The Title IX Coordinator will also contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of Colgate’s Plan for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversees and coordinates investigations, responses, and resolutions of complaints relating to reports of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and other related policy violations; including working collegially and/or cooperatively with outside legal counsel, advisors and investigative partners in the Title IX process.
  • Working with divisional partners, coordinates and implements education and training to students and employees to promote a culture of respect and to prevent sexual misconduct and discrimination, ensuring that all members of the college community understand their responsibilities and rights under both the law and University policies.
  • Documents and maintains records of complaints, University responses, and mandatory trainings.
  • Oversees institutional compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of the 1972 Civil Rights Act (“Title IX”), and the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization of 2013 (“VAWA”) Violence Elimination Act (“Campus SaVE”), and other related federal and state laws. Remains current with Title IX related developments and changes and keeps abreast with current federal and state laws, regulations, and policies related to discriminatory practices.
  • Works closely with the Dean of the College and Dean of the Faculty divisions, Human Resources, Campus Safety, and all other areas of the College to ensure that compliance and educational efforts cover all applicable laws relating to sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, gender and interpersonal violence, sexual assault and other such violations.
  • Works with colleagues in the Office of Equity and Diversity to monitor campus climate while collaborating with senior leadership and others to identify and address systemic problems.
  • Responsible for the oversight and coordination of investigations, responses, and resolutions of complaints relating to reports of sexual harassment, sexual assault, bias, and other related policy violations.
  • Responsible for University compliance with federal Title IX regulations, development of strategies to combat sexual violence, and is a member of the Discrimination and Harassment Response Team ( DHT ), strategies for avoiding bias incidents.
This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority ( CSA ), in accordance with the federal statutory requirements of the Jeanne Clery Act. CSAs are required to and responsible for reporting allegations of crimes they receive from students and employees to the Campus Safety Department.

Professional Experience/ Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with issues of Title IX, discrimination, harassment or other civil rights-based positions, or a combination of experience and education.
  • Excellent, written, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of or background in understanding and providing guidance on state and federal laws and regulations related to Title IX, VAWA, Clery Act and ADA .
  • The ability to handle confidential material with utmost discretion is critical.
  • Must be capable of working collegially and effectively with a diverse group of colleagues to include faculty, staff and students on a daily basis.
Preferred Qualifications


Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree is required.

Juris Doctorate or other advanced degree is preferred.
