Research Specialist

Position Summary:
Performs research activities and analysis, recording observations and measurements, and reports results. Participates in analyzing and preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision.
Duties may include:
- Preparing standard solutions for calibration and analyses.
- Interpreting test results and comparing with determined standards and limits.
- Collecting laboratory or field data.
- Conducting research and analysis of scientific data.
- Participating in research design discussions.
- Performing literature reviews.
- Preparing reports.
- Comparing data and historical records for trend verification.
- Developing reference files, comparison charts, and graphs on research data.
- Assisting with site inspections and field oversight.
- Having little or no supervisory responsibilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Under the direction of the Operations Manager, the Research Specialist will assist faculty with the conduct of original and collaborative research on cattle nutrition, beef cow reproduction, management of beef cow-calf and stocker systems and forage production.
Principle responsibilities include: managing/monitoring of the day-to-day operations of cattle experiments, forage test plots, and sample collection; assist in the establishment and maintenance of experiments designed/developed by the principal investigator and organize research related to the beef and forage systems program; assisting researchers from other locations conducting research at NMCREEC; assisting activities of undergraduate researchers; managing data, training and assisting interns and graduate students. Minimal travel will be required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.S. degree in animal science, agronomy or related field.
- Following pre-established procedures or protocols.
- Collecting and reviewing scientific data.
- Keeping complete and accurate records.
- Working in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- M.S. degree in animal science, agronomy or related field or 2 years of research experience beyond B.S. degree.
- Two years of farm or ranch experience.
- Experience assisting in basic animal healthcare such as giving vaccination shots; low-stress cattle handling techniques and care; performing artificial insemination in cattle; using basic ultrasound for detecting pregnancy; and conducting research trials in cattle.
- Basic understanding of agronomy research techniques, field plot management, and calibration of pesticide application equipment.
- Experience operating, transporting, and maintaining farm machinery and irrigation systems safely.
- Experience in the conduct of research following basic scientific principles including developing and following protocols; gathering and compiling data; use of computer software like Word and Excel, basic laboratory equipment operation, and contributing to reports and manuscripts.
- Work independently when needed but demonstrate effective communication skills to allow for successful working relationships with coworkers, collaborators, faculty, staff, and students.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- Applicant will be required to routinely work with cattle
- Lift, carry, and/or otherwise move heavy materials weighing up to 70 lbs.
- Operating and working near farm machinery, cattle working equipment, driving light trucks, towing trailers.
Required Licensures, Certifications or other
- Professional Pesticide Applicators license or ability to obtain on within 6 months of hire.
- Must possess: valid driver’s license and ability to drive a UI vehicle (pass driving record check and defensive driving course).
- Drive to field work sites with some overnight travel a possibility.
- Work flexible and/or overtime schedule when the workload dictates.
