Full-Time Faculty Position in Visual Arts, Drawing at Bennington College

Bennington College

Job Type: Full Time

Location: Bennington, Vermont, United States

Bennington College invites applications for full-time faculty position in drawing, to begin Fall 2023. Candidates must be practicing artists who are committed to teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate level, and possess the capacity to bring their professional work into meaningful dialogue with their teaching. Candidates should have strong exhibition records, be proficient in the technical, theoretical, and historical foundations of contemporary visual art practice, and be capable of demonstrating and fostering wide-ranging and complex engagement with visual art in its broadest definition.

Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to developing curriculum that invites the participation of students with a broad range of interests and from diverse backgrounds. Especially important to this curriculum is the inclusion and true recognition of diverse practices and points of view in contemporary art. Responsibilities include studio courses in drawing as well as the opportunity for courses in painting, thematic, cross-disciplinary and/or cross-media, studios or seminars; a total of five courses per year is expected.

Bennington College is a small residential liberal arts college in southern Vermont, long distinguished for its progressive approach to higher education. The College was founded in 1932 on the principle of active engagement in learning, which is manifest in individualized plans of study developed by students together with faculty. Bennington's open curricular structures facilitate innovative teaching across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Faculty members at Bennington are teacher-practitioners whose professional work is in ongoing dialogue with their teaching and advising. Faculty teach five courses per year, and fully engaged student advising is an expectation.

Bennington serves a diverse student population inclusive of members of ethnically/racially minoritized, international, LGBTQIA+, and disability communities as well as diverse gender identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, and political beliefs. Our staff and faculty also reflect diverse and intersecting backgrounds and identities. All employees are expected to be respectful and responsive to these differences in the service of building community that promotes student and employee success. Each individual (faculty, staff, and students) will be accountable for upholding these values. The College's approach to pluralism and inclusivity—both as fields of inquiry and practice—prioritizes flexible thought and invites the examination of access, value, power, and privilege through its institutional policies and areas of study. We encourage applicants from diverse realms of interest, backgrounds, experience, and accomplishment to apply.

Candidates should apply online by submitting: a) letter of application that describes teaching experience, professional work and includes a reflection on the candidate's potential to contribute to an increasingly inclusive and diverse environment through teaching, research, and/or service; b) curriculum vitae; c) teaching statement which includes a description of three (3) proposed courses for Bennington College; d) link to the candidate's personal website and/or a single PDF portfolio (not to exceed 5-7 MB) of no more than 20 labeled images of recent work and e) the names and contact information for three references.

Review of applications will begin January 09, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. This position requires the successful completion and acceptable results of a background check.
