The Department of History at West Virginia University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in History with a specialization in the Modern Middle East, beginning August 11, 2023. This is a nine-month tenure track position with full benefits. We seek an outstanding candidate whose teaching and/or research specialization will contribute to one or more of the department’s four thematic strengths: gender and kinship; imperial and postcolonial societies; labor and political economy; and war and society. The successful candidate will teach a survey course in World History as well as specialized courses in the Modern Middle East at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates with a broad understanding of and ability to teach an undergraduate survey on the Islamic World are encouraged to apply.

The WVU History Department is a diverse group of productive scholars who have contributed significantly to their respective fields. History faculty have a proven track record of obtaining outside funding to enhance their research profile. The Department has a robust graduate program, with specialties in Appalachian History, 19th century America, Public History, and modern African history. Members of the History Department faculty have fostered a collegial department culture, which has attracted and retained excellent graduate students into its doctoral and master’s degree programs. The History Department annually hosts two lecture series that bring in expert scholars to campus, not only to give university-wide presentations, but to mentor graduate students in small-seminar formats.

Located in Morgantown, WVU is an R1 research land grant university. The home of the state’s flagship institution has been recognized as one of the most livable small cities in the U.S. There are extensive recreational opportunities, excellent public schools, and a supportive university environment in which to develop a visible and productive career. Morgantown is within 90 minutes of Pittsburgh and 3.5 hours from the Washington/Baltimore metropolitan area. Qualifications :

The successful candidate must have 1) a Ph.D. in History or a closely related field such as Middle Eastern Studies or Islamic Studies at time of appointment; 2) area of specialization in Modern Middle East history; 3) ability to teach a survey of World History at the graduate and undergraduate levels; 4) strong potential for outstanding contribution to the department’s undergraduate and graduate teaching and research mission; 5) demonstrated ability or potential to develop a robust and externally funded research program. The teaching load is two courses or course equivalents per semester.
