Position Description

The Division of the Arts at Spelman College invites applications for a part-time instructor position to teach the Division of the Arts Freshman Seminar. The seminar is required for students in the Division of the Arts, which includes Art & Visual Culture, Dance, Performance & Choreography, Music and Theater & Performance. The seminar introduces interdisciplinarity in contemporary art practices and the themes explored by artists including those who work with digital technologies. The seminar focuses on considering themes for which to build creative work and research and is also intended as a forum to share information and support future collaborations for projects.

The ideal candidate will have experience with contemporary art making practices that embrace collaboration, interdisciplinarity, cross disciplinary strategies, and engage with current social issues.

The appointment requires a one course teaching load.

The Department of Art & Visual Culture offers majors and minors in art, art history, documentary filmmaking and photography, as well as a minor in curatorial studies. It encourages creative work that engages a variety of aesthetic and intellectual fields and social contexts, which expand the breadth of conventional art practices. Students explore materials and concepts while considering their roles as artists within broader social and political contexts.

The Department of Art & Visual Culture is part of ARTS@Spelman, which also includes the departments of Theater & Performance, Dance Performance & Choreography, Music, the Digital Moving Image Salon, the Museum of Fine Art and the Spelman College Innovation Lab. The College is planning a new innovation and arts building, which will be an interdisciplinary environment that supports and advances experimentation, collaboration, active play, research and the imaginative use of digital technologies.

Qualifications

Candidates will hold a M.F.A. in studio art or related fields or a M.A in art history. Prior teaching experience in higher education is required.
