The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (SOM) seeks a dynamic and enthusiastic Instructional Technologist - Trainer to support digital pedagogy and the academic and professional development needs of SOM faculty members. Reporting to the Instructional Design Manager, the Instructional Technologist –Trainer will possess an in-depth understanding of instructional technology issues related to learning in online, hybrid/blended, and traditional courses, as well as experience using a wide range of hardware and software tools to develop learning materials and multimedia assets. The Instructional Technologist will join a team that works collaboratively to support the teaching and learning mission of the University.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implement strategies to optimize the configuration of the LMS to meet identified school and program needs.
  • Maintain and improve upon the instructional technology infrastructure at SOM including the daily operation, use, and configuration of video streaming platforms, learning management systems, and other relevant tools/licenses for course production and delivery.
  • Coordinate custom platform integrations with internal teams, external vendors and contractors, and university IT teams.
  • Conduct periodic maintenance, quality assurances, usability, and accessibility checks for the LMS, course documents, and other learning technologies.
  • Provide first tier LMS user support (Canvas). Investigate technological issues and develop solutions to resolve or ease learning experience stress points.
  • Conduct regular training sessions for faculty and staff on instructional technology tools and services.
  • Create and maintain user guides and technical documentation for instructional designers, content editors, faculty, coordinators, and other roles as needed.
  • Assist with the design and delivery of online, hybrid, and face-to-face instructional technology training to staff.
  • Assist Instructional Designers and multimedia staff in developing supplemental, hybrid, and fully online courses adhering to organizational standards.
  • Provide instructional technology support to projects and personnel within the SOM.
  • Manage project timelines and coordinate with team members and partners to meet project deliverables.
  • Research and evaluate instructional technology tools and resources and their effectiveness.
  • Work with the instructional designers and multimedia staff to pilot technology-based learning material and make recommendations for implementation.
  • Support the Office of Online Education and senior leadership in the creation and management of course materials, including syllabi and assessment data.
  • Collaborate and consult with other distance education and instructional design and technology staff at Johns Hopkins and other universities.
  • Ensure compliance with established accessibility (ADA/508/UDL) standards as well as university/program standards.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field.
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate Degree in related discipline a plus.

  • Experience with training and staff development.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within an academic community.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in collaborative instructional development processes and activities.
  • Experience with JIRA, Examsoft, and Panopto a plus.
  • Basic web skills including knowledge of HTML/HTML5.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (Canvas preferred).
  • Understanding of pedagogical issues related to adult learning.

  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

  • Occasionally pushing, pulling objects weighing 30lbs. or less.
  • Ability to move about.

Starting Salary Range: $25.40 - 34.90/hr (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
