Job Details

Woodbury University invites applications for the position of Dean, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. The Dean serves as the chief academic and executive officer of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Woodbury University providing leadership for faculty, staff, and students and overseeing programs, policies, facilities, and budgets. Reporting to the Sr. Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Dean advocates for human, physical, and fiscal resources and is the key representative of the school to stakeholders, including alumni, employers, and donors. As the leader of the school, the Dean works to promote continued curricular development, physical and financial resource development, research and teaching initiatives of the faculty, student scholarship opportunities, professional, community and alumni relationships. Leading by example, the Dean demonstrates excellence in scholarly and academic achievement, professional outreach, and development. Responsibilities

Operational Leadership:

  • Works with the faculty of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences in stewarding the mission, vision, and strategic plan, charting directions for the programs housed within the school, in alignment with the mission of the University.
  • Ensures the operations and performance of the programs within the College comply with the standards of designated accrediting bodies.
  • Ensures that the activities of the College support the teaching, research, and service missions of the University.
  • Facilitates and moderates collegial and respectful communication between the University and the College.
  • Provides leadership and support to chairs and coordinators.
  • Provides written evaluations for full-time faculty for contract renewal and rank advancement.
  • Provides annual performance reviews for supervised staff members.
  • Collaborates with chairs/coordinators on the resolution of student, faculty, and staff issues and concerns.
  • Establishes strategic directions for recruitment and retention of students and faculty.
  • Advocates during the annual University budgeting process for human, physical, and fiscal resources.
  • Manages human, physical, and fiscal resources to support the College’s programs, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Implements and manages the budget for College, via responsibility for creating, implementing, and evaluating budgets and cost projections for the College.
  • Ensures the College complies with University policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

University Leadership:

  • Participates in university-level leadership as a member of the Deans’ Council and other committees as assigned.
  • Collaborates with the SVPAA and other Deans to provide leadership for the entire University.
  • Fosters interdepartmental collaborations.
  • Supports the advancement and development functions of the University by developing strong connections to national disciplinary organizations; local and national industry and governmental organizations; and potential donors.
  • Avoids conflicts of interest, in which financial or other personal considerations may compromise (or appear to compromise) the allocation of professional time, energy, or judgment when acting as dean.
  • Mentors junior faculty and staff.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree (preferably in one of the disciplines offered in the College)
  • Successful administrative experience at the department level or higher, including program development, faculty relations, budgeting, student recruitment, online teaching, and faculty and student retention.
  • Evidence of commitment to teaching excellence.
  • A record of continuous intellectual achievement, including significant publications and/or creative works.
  • Excellent communication skills: interpersonal, written, and verbal.
  • Demonstrated experience in building community partnerships, maintaining liaisons with external groups, and obtaining external funds.

Physical Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodations. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Good vision, hearing/listening, speech.
  • Simple to complex reading, writing, clerical. and math skills.
  • Majority of duties are sedentary in nature.  Position requires extended periods of sitting.
  • Periods of standing and walking required.
  • Analyzing, perception and judgment/decision making ability.
  • Standard office hours with some irregular hours as required to meet the administrative responsibilities.
