Job Description
Montgomery College, Tacoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, has an immediate need for a part-time, Instructional Associate. Academics center, in the Humanities Area Learning Centers. The work schedule is Monday through Thursday, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (20 hours a week). The schedule may vary from semester to semester based on the needs of the two centers. This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 25 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Duties include but are not limited to:
Monitors the Academic Success Center
- Responsible for the equipment and resources in the Lab while it is open for use.
- Ensure that the Lab is clean and in good order and that the equipment and supplies are properly stored and secured at the end of the shift.
- Controls access to the Lab areas. Monitors WC Online Appointment System.
- Engages in computer troubleshooting and reports any troubles to the help desk.
- Provides assistance in the TPSS Writing, Reading, and Languages Center as needed.
- Monitors student-workers attendance.
- Guide student-workers to be professional in helping students.
- Trains student-workers on how to understand and follow the Lab procedures and practices according to the Academic Success Center policies.
- Teaches student-workers about the many instructional resources of the Academic Success Center.
- Provides tutoring to students (in-person and virtual) to aid in understanding the subject or material. Subjects are to be one of the following: history, philosophy, political science, psychology, economics, sociology, or other humanities/social science disciplines.
- Provides direction to students by reviewing assignments, guides, lesson plans, texts, and learning resources, explaining and discussing subjects and learning materials, and advising students on learning/study techniques.
- Reviews students' homework and assignments, essays, and other academic work. Explains and discuss weaknesses and how to improve work.
- Provides application assistance and helps students navigate the Internet. Assists students in utilizing learning software and other resource materials online; explains and demonstrates the use of such materials; selects and/or recommends material depending on students' needs and answer students' questions regarding the use of such instructional materials.
- Coaches and directs them through the process of using the wide variety of interactive instructional software, textbooks, videos, and DVDs available in the Academic Success Center's library.
- Develops and teaches workshops to promote student success.
- Provides information about the Academic Success Center's resources available for Professors.
- Develops, under the direction of faculty, and/ or reproduces instructional materials such as handouts, tests, and other such materials for use in tutoring and provides the student with opportunities to practice the subject matter concepts.
- Creates and maintains an inventory of the video/DVD library, and textbooks .
- Ensures that resources are properly cataloged, labeled, and shelved.
- Conducts student orientations and introduces them to all of them the resources and services available at the Academic Success Center.
- Designs and delivers workshops to promote student success in coursework.
- Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship
- Minimum of three years experience in tutoring and demonstrating concepts associated with the subject area and some experience in identifying resources that enhance the student’s learning/study experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in history, philosophy, political science, psychology, economics, sociology, or other humanities/social science disciplines or a related academic field required or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Experience in supporting and advising students and faculty on the use of computer hardware, interactive software, multi-media resources, and other audio-visual equipment.
- Experience in training and supervising student workers in a higher education setting.
- Master’s degree in history, political science, philosophy, or a related field in the humanities or social science.
