Reporting to the Senior Manager, Baker Research & Data Services (BRDS) and part of the BRDS team, the Research Data Acquisition Specialist will lead all facets of Baker Library's Data Licensing Service, a suite of custom services for HBS faculty seeking to acquire licensed datasets for their individual research needs. Leadership responsibilities include data sourcing, licensing and invoicing, ingestion, and discovery and sharing. These services are embedded within the larger service offerings of Baker Library and tailored to the specific research needs of our faculty and their collaborators.

The Research Data Acquisition Specialist will be part of a dynamic hands-on team supporting Baker Library (BL) technology, ensuring we have the technology, workflows, and support needed to satisfy the range of information the scholarly and professional community needs.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Leads all facets of Baker Library's Data Licensing Service: sourcing, licensing, ingesting, discovery and sharing of third party data in the fields of business, finance, and other disciplines
  • Serves as the primary contact for faculty requests for licensed data and keeps all stakeholders informed throughout the acquisition process.
  • Coordinates activities and consults regularly with key partners in the data acquisition process across HBS and Harvard (Contemporary Collections staff, Research Computing, Financial Office, contracts specialists, HBS IT, and others).
  • Leads Data Licensing Service planning, assessment, and outreach activities, including assessing the success of the Service through gathering and reporting of metrics and activities.
  • Contributes to the overall goals of BRDS including communication and promotion of services.
  • Recommends datasets in high demand by faculty for consideration for site-wide licensing by our Manager, Contemporary Collections.
  • Documents and refines workflows, procedures, and practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Information:

This role is offered as a hybrid (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA based campus 3 days per week. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 3+ years of applicable work experience required

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Advanced degree in information management, library science, business or related field, or equivalent experience is preferred
  • Familiarity with business and financial concepts, datasets and data vendors.
  • Experience providing research support or library reference service in business, finance, economics, and/or other social science research environments.
  • Ability to open large datasets in a variety of formats, understand their file structures, and extract data.
  • Firm understanding of good data management practices related to data storage, delivery and security.
  • Experience reviewing, interpreting, and managing Data Use Agreements and negotiating terms of use with data providers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative and/or team environment.
  • Consistent record of managing client relationships and superb customer service.
  • This includes setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and sharing workloads and projects with a research team.
  • Ability to partner with research, business, legal, and technical subject matter experts when necessary to support researchers while managing risks appropriately.
  • Willingness and proven ability to proactively take responsibility and action to resolve cross functional issues across organizational boundaries.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to exercise maturity and good judgment in dealing with priority customers and vendors
