The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at California State University, Fresno invites creative and innovative applicants for a tenure-track, academic year faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education. Fresno State is committed to serving our region's culturally and ethnically diverse student population by providing cutting-edge and collaborative educator preparation programs that advance equitable opportunities for current and aspiring PreK-12 educators. For this position, teaching a PreK-8 mathematics pedagogy course will be expected. Depending on areas of interest/expertise and departmental needs, opportunities may be available to chair thesis or doctoral committees, as well as to teach and/or develop credential and graduate (master's and doctoral) courses in educational technology, science pedagogy, transdisciplinary curriculum design for PreK-12 classrooms, culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogy, child and adolescent development, and Ethnic Studies pedagogy.

In addition to teaching credential and graduate courses, our faculty are expected to be actively engaged in scholarship—research, writing for publication, presenting at conferences, and seeking grant funding. Service benefiting the department, school, university, community, and profession is also an important faculty expectation. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental and student demographic needs and the academic background and interests of the faculty member. Leadership and engagement in PreK-12 mathematics professional development initiatives will be expected.

The university has a strong history of service and preparation of educators since the institution’s founding as a Normal School in 1911. The Kremen School of Education and Human Development has been nationally accredited since 1954 and offers 34 distinct credentials, numerous master's degree programs, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. Fresno State has recently been elevated to “Doctoral University — High Research Activity” or R2 status in the most recent Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Qualifications :

Required Education (from an accredited institution)

• Earned doctorate in education or closely-related discipline with an emphasis in mathematics education.
  
  
• Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For continued employment in the tenure track position, the doctorate must be completed by August 1, 2023.
  
  

Required Experience:

• Mathematics teaching experience at the elementary or secondary school level
  
  
• Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnoracial, cultural, gendered, and socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities
  
  
• Experience and dedicated commitment to designing transdisciplinary, culturally and linguistically sustaining mathematics-related curriculum that is project- and community-based to serve Fresno State’s regional and student populations
  
  

Preferred Experience:

• A record of research and scholarship in areas related to mathematics education
  
  
• Active involvement in professional organizations and community-based service related to mathematics education
  
  
• Experience providing professional development in mathematics education for PreK-12 educators
  
  
• Demonstrated experience working in collaborative projects, teaching, and research
  
  
• Experience in grant development, writing, and implementation, particularly related to transdisciplinary curriculum and pedagogies

About the College and Department:

The Kremen School of Education and Human Development’s (KSOEHD) mission is recruitment and development of ethically informed leaders for classroom teaching, education administration, counseling, and higher education. Our programs are accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). Together, the programs aim to foster candidate dispositions of collaboration, valuing diversity, critical thinking, ethical judgments, reflection, and lifelong learning. Our mission is realized through a framework of teaching, scholarship, and services that prepare highly competent educators and human development specialists, while providing professional support and leadership to the community, promoting applied research, and providing experiences and opportunities that will enable employed professionals to remain current in their fields. Additionally, the KSOEHD hosts an Equity Scholars Program, providing funding to support research related to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.

Faculty in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) are committed to educational equity, excellence, and empowerment through their teaching, research and service. The department provides coursework and clinical experiences for over 1500 prospective PreK-12 teachers annually. All teaching credential programs are designed to prepare teachers to be reflective thinkers, problem solvers, and decision makers who are equipped to expand opportunities and meet the sociocultural and linguistic needs of our local contexts.

Faculty in the Department of C&I lead courses for over two dozen cohorts of students enrolled in Multiple Subject , Single Subject , Education Specialist , and Bilingual credential and authorization programs, including teacher residency programs .

In addition to offering teacher preparation coursework, Department faculty teach courses in the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership at Fresno State ( DPELFS ) and the department’s two master’s programs which typically serve over 140 students a year: the fully online Master of Arts in Teaching ( MAT ); and the Master of Arts in Education–Curriculum and Instruction option ( M.A.Ed.-C&I ). These highly flexible master’s programs are tailored to students’ areas of professional interest and specializations.

Department faculty are also highly engaged in local/regional, statewide and national and international partnerships. Initiatives such as the Mathematics and Science Teacher Initiative ( MSTI ) support numerous mathematics and science PreK-12 teacher preparation efforts across the campus. The San Joaquin Valley Mathematics Project is also housed in the Kremen School and has been providing cutting-edge PreK-12 professional development to teachers in the region since 1989. The Office of Community Based Learning coordinates afterschool and summer STEM experiences for thousands of students in Fresno State’s service region. The Joyce Huggins Early Education Center provides outstanding, research-based education for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. A STEAM Innovation Preschool is in development and reflects the school’s commitment to STEM education. Finally, Kremen houses Enseñamos en el Valle Central , a Hispanic Serving Institution initiative focused on expanding community college pathways for first-generation, bilingual,, and racialized communities.
