Fresno State’s B.A. and M.A. programs prepare students for success in a variety of art-related careers by building cultural awareness, critical thinking abilities, and visual and verbal communication skills. Art making is a mode of thought and a means of communication that complements and transcends words. As artists, art instructors, museum curators, and arts administrators, our graduates interpret and transform cultural values and human experience. We envision Fresno State’s Studio Art programs as a visual think tank to enrich and transform the lives of our students and community.

Fresno State’s Studio Art faculty share a strong commitment to students’ opportunities for growth as well as technical skills and creative mindsets for social mobility. By mobilizing multiple modes of intelligence, including visual, spatial and processual thinking, art making can help “level the playing field” and build confidence in diverse student populations, including first-generation college students of under-represented minorities. This benefits not only our students but our whole community. Many recent Fresno State Studio Art alumni have become community leaders, working as high school art teachers, community college instructors, and tenure-track professors in the region and beyond.
