Job Summary
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Humanities and the Arts and working in close collaboration with the Dean’s leadership team, Associate Dean for Student Success and Academic Programs, the Associate Dean of Faculty Success and Research is charged with helping to provide oversight of internal operations focused on faculty success, diversity, and inclusive excellence in the College. He or she will provide leadership for tenured and tenure-track faculty recruitment, hiring, mentoring, promotion, and tenure; foster a culture of innovative, interdisciplinary research, scholarship, and creative activity; support teaching innovations and interdisciplinary collaborations in and beyond the college; and promote a culture of evidence-based measures of student learning and faculty success. The Associate Dean supports strategic planning and implementation of initiatives related to the mission and vision of the College and the University, including projects with local, regional, and national organizations and entities, including the City of San Jose. The Associate Dean for Faculty Success and Research also represents the College on the University's Research Advisory Council.
Both Associate Deans of the College of Humanities and the Arts support the Dean in maintaining positive, efficient, and effective operations in the College. The Associate Deans support program review, act as hearing officers for grievances, and analyze institutional data to support evidence-based decision-making. They regularly interface with faculty and staff from across the University, including those in Student Services, Facilities Development and Operations, Instructional Technology Services, the Division of Research and Innovation, and throughout Academic Affairs. The Associate Deans provide collaborative oversight on issues related to facilities, health and safety, and space allocation; research issues and prepare reports for the College and the division; recommend policy or procedural changes, handle confidential problems, and help ensure compliance with policies and procedures. The Associate Deans represent the Dean at meetings and events and serve in her capacity when she is absent. Above all else, the Associate Deans work in partnership with the Dean and her staff to ensure a positive, collegial, collaborative culture in the College.

Key Responsibilities
- Oversees all aspects of faculty success in the college, including, but not limited to: recruitment, retention, and evaluation of tenured and tenure-track faculty; evidence-based best practices for supporting inclusive excellence and diversity; part-time faculty contracts and annual and cumulative reviews, faculty complaints and grievances
- Support efforts to enhance faculty development and research, scholarship, and creative activities, grant activity, and teaching innovation
- Supports the Dean to increase funding and opportunities for innovation, interdisciplinary, and collaboration in research, scholarship, and creative activities as well as programming to support inclusive excellence and collaboration with the surrounding community
- Functions as the lead Associate Dean responsible for supporting the Dean in all processes around hiring, retaining, and evaluating permanent faculty. Associate Dean of Student Success and Academic Programs may be directed by Dean to support these processes as needed
- Takes the lead on conflict resolution and potential grievance issues with faculty; and supports chairs in all aspects of academic personnel as directed and required in collaboration with the other Associate Dean of the college and the Dean
- Enforces existing policies and practices regarding academic personnel and creates and implements new policies and/or guidelines as needed and appropriate
- Supports diversity and inclusive excellence efforts in College and at University
- In consultation with the Dean and his or her management and leadership team, assists with strategic planning and provides leadership for college-wide initiatives and university/community collaborative projects aligned with the College’s Mission and Vision
- Helps the Dean and his or her team to establish and maintain a professional, positive, collegial, collaborative culture throughout the College
- Assists Dean in establishing and maintaining positive internal and external relations with diverse populations and constituencies, including: faculty, staff, students, community partners, alumni, donors, supporters, and external agencies
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence, including respect, courtesy, civility, appreciation, empathy, trust, inclusion, and consultation
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and supportive work relationships with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, administrators and other stakeholders, including the general public
- Thorough knowledge of the disciplines and programs represented in the College of Humanities and the Arts
- Strong knowledge of major trends in higher education, especially as related to faculty success and teaching innovation
- Strong ability to collaborate with, to advise, and to support faculty and Chairs on issues related to the College
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and fairness; experience working effectively and respectfully with a broad range of people and personality types
- Demonstrated organizational awareness and ability to stay current on administrative policies, procedures, and business practices
- Strong ability to analyze and to use diverse sources of data to utilize resources effectively, to improve quality, and to drive decision-making
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak effectively in front of large and small groups; to help various constituents navigate complex policies and procedures; and to produce clear and accurate written communications about a wide range of issues
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in planning and executing facilities-related projects
- Demonstrated attention to and knowledge of safety and risk issues, including those associated with facilities
- Terminal degree in a field in the college
- Experience in academic leadership/administration such as department chair, program coordinator, or with similar experiences through department or other committee service)
- A research, scholarly, or creative activities record and teaching experience that demonstrates excellence in one or more disciplines in the college and qualifies the candidate for tenure in a department within the college
- A record that demonstrates the ability to lead and support faculty, staff, and students at a large, comprehensive public institution
- Earned doctorate in a field in the college
- Three (3) or more years of experience in academic leadership/administration
- Demonstrated success in producing innovative and/or interdisciplinary research, scholarship, or creative activity; garnering internal and external grants; or related accomplishments.
- Experience with major college-level administrative functions, such as academic budgets, course scheduling, faculty appointments, and student and faculty success efforts
- A research, scholarly, or creative activities record, along with teaching experience, that demonstrates excellence in one or more disciplines in the college and qualifies the candidate for a tenured full professor in a department within the college
- Experience in the CSU (California State University) System
Compensation
Classification: Administrator III
Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience
