ELP Assistant Advisor



Summary:

This position provides assistance to the English Language Program (ELP) in serving English language students and faculty on the VCU Monroe-Park Campus. Emphasis is placed on direct services to ELP students, such as student advising and registration into ELP classes, as well as with specific administrative aspects of the program. This position also requires the candidate to act as a substitute teacher for online and in-person English language courses as requested.

This position reports directly to the Director of the English Language Program and includes the following responsibilities:

Typical Duties

Student Advising
  • Assist with office/phone coverage support and walk-in visitors with general inquiries and program information;
  • Assist with advising ELP students regarding their class schedule and level placement and assist in resolving scheduling and billing matters;
  • Register students for courses each semester using Banner:
  • Refer students to university resources as needed;
  • Monitor student attendance per faculty reporting each session;
  • Assist with the New Student Orientation.
Course Maintenance

  • Assist with course scheduling documents and associated data as requested.
Data Reporting
  • Assist with enrollment letters, completion letters, and final grade letters to the ELP students as requested;
  • Assist with data reporting regarding student enrollment, registration, student demographics, and retention rates.
Faculty Support
  • Act as a substitute teacher for online and in-person English language courses as requested;
  • Develop advising materials as requested;
  • Assist with student assessment.
Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, international studies, or other related fields;
  • Experience advising students in a secondary school or higher education settings;
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and organizational skills and demonstrated success communicating across cultures;
  • Experience working effectively in an office environment;
  • Ability to maintain a very positive and friendly demeanor in a busy office environment;
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Native or native-like proficiency/fluency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in education with International Focus
  • Experience with global education, event planning, and international student services;
  • Demonstrated experience using “Banner” in a university setting;
  • Experience in teaching in a university setting;
  • Experience with placement testing and student assessment.
Salary Range: $15.00/hour
