Job Description

The Director of Engineering Online will report to the Associate Dean for Global Engagement and Chief Technology Officer in the College of Engineering.

Serving as the main point of contact for Virginia Tech Engineering Online (VTEO) which includes communicating with faculty, staff, and students in the College of Engineering (COE) to provide support for online learning related initiatives this position will:
-Based upon market trends, consult as needed with academic deans, department heads and faculty to revise existing online courses, create new online courses and online certificate and degree programs for graduate and undergraduate education.
-Develop and manage a marketing and recruitment plan to target and grow a global market for engineering online programs.
-Implement and manage an educational data plan to capture the pertinent information and data for analyzing, designing, developing, and evaluating CEO online learning environments (data analytics).
-Support the US News and World report data collection process for Online Graduate Programs in Engineering.
-Work closely with Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies (TLOS) and COE Instructional Technology team to assist faculty in developing their online courses or programs as needed and creates a culture of widely shared technology-enhanced, effective teaching and learning practices.

This position will also serve as the Director of Cardinal Education (CE), a legacy state-wide consortium in the following capacity:
-Serve as the liaison between Virginia Tech and the five Cardinal Education participating universities (UVA, ODU, GM, VCU, VSU) writing collaborative grants, attending annual meetings, and marketing programs.
-Collaborate with a representative of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) along with industry members of the advisory board.
-Provide college level leadership combined with university and state level consultation for the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of Cardinal Education initiatives (e.g., degrees and course sharing programs) in accordance with the university, college, and state governance structures.
-Supervise and collaborate with Online Learning Specialist and Administrator for Cardinal Education.

Additional responsibilities are related to managing finances and personnel:
-Supervise and collaborate with Online Learning Specialist and Administrator for Cardinal Education and GA design team.
-Manage sub-org budgets along with internal and external grant funding.

Required Qualifications

-A terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D.) from an accredited college or university in instructional design, instructional technology, educational technology, or related field.
-Experience in online learning in education.
-Experience creating and implementing online programs.
-Demonstrated experience in marketing online programs.
-Supervisory experience.
-Demonstrated ability to respond to the needs of a diverse student and faculty population.
-Proven organizational skills and the ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
-Experience mentoring graduate students.
-Experience managing budgets.
-Research and grant writing experience.

Preferred Qualifications

-Experience with the Learning Management Systems (Canvas preferred).
-Experience with learner analytics a plus.
-Understanding of quantitative and qualitative data analytics and research.
-Research agenda in online learning with a STEM focus.
-Experience using Adobe Creative Suite, Articulate Storyline or other authoring tools used for online learning.
-Assists the COE identify a set of best practices that work for the students and aligns instructional development activities in support of those best practices, such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
