Job Summary

The Electronic Resources Librarian will be a member of the Electronic Resources and Serials group within the Collection and Discovery Services team. Smith College is a member of the Five College Consortium and we have recently moved to a shared catalog in the FOLIO integrated library system. The individual in this position will manage the full lifecycle of electronic resources including journals, journal packages and databases, with a particular focus on individually purchased eBooks and eBook packages. They will review, negotiate and sign eBook licenses, agreements, and contracts to assure license terms are in line with current best practices. They will work collaboratively with colleagues across departments on ongoing work and discrete projects to ensure the libraries' online resources are accessible to the campus community, and will engage with eResource colleagues across the Five College consortium around shared work and priorities. A hybrid remote/on-site work schedule is available for this position.

Essential Functions

Manage eBooks:

Track eBook purchasing and access in FOLIO Agreements and other FOLIO apps. Work with metadata colleagues to ensure that bibliographic records in FOLIO Inventory accurately reflect our purchased and subscribed eBooks and that they include current access urls. Maintain relationships with eBook vendors through various means of communication. Evaluate eBook package offers from vendors, weighing relevance to and overlap with the libraries' collection, and make purchasing recommendations to the Head of Collection Development & Management. Participate in the review of licenses and agreements, taking the lead on those related to eBooks. Participate in consortial and broader conversations and learning around whole eBook interlibrary loan and other emerging topics related to eBooks in libraries.

Provide access to electronic resources:

Ensure reliable on-campus and remote access to licensed and select open access eBooks, eJournals and databases. Manage resource metadata in openURL link resolver system (HLM and Full Text Finder), the library services platform (FOLIO), and other electronic resource management systems. Identify and resolve problems related to online access through consultation and testing with vendors, students, faculty, and staff. Actively participate in system migrations to facilitate accurate and seamless access to electronic resources in the libraries' collection. Track and document perpetual access to ensure Smith College Libraries retains access to paid content. Collaborate across library departments to highlight and promote new and broadly useful online resources in order to increase visibility and usage. Identify gaps in workflows, problem solve solutions, and keep pace with rapidly evolving approaches to eResource management.

Usage Statistics:

Gather, maintain and analyze COUNTER compliant and other usage statistics for electronic resources on an annual and as needed basis. Provide usage data to liaisons upon request, and work in collaboration with the Head of Collection Development and Management to guide data-driven decision making around renewals and purchases.

Documentation and training:

Hire, train and supervise students to support eResource management work. Create and maintain documentation of related workflows and policies.

Other Functions

Ensure that a framework of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility is used in the approach to daily and long-term work, and in interactions with colleagues and library users. Participate in developing goals, objectives, and implementation plans pertaining to the libraries’ Collection and Discovery Services activities. Contribute effectively to teamwork, communication, and problem solving. Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent education or experience; 2 years of experience related to the work of the position, preferably in an academic environment, or equivalent.

Skills

Excellent organization, problem solving, and communication skills; high level of attention to detail; ability to balance multiple projects and to organize and prioritize work effectively; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; proficiency with standard office software (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs) and library software (i.e. FOLIO, EBSCO's Holdings Management or similar).
