Assistant Director of Market Analysis

About the Opportunity

1.Summary

Reporting to the Senior Assistant Director, Market Analysis, the Assistant Director, Market Analysis supports Northeastern University's market research function in the Office of Enrollment Research and Analytics. This Office's primary function is to support leadership decision-making through the dissemination of research and data insights.

The primary focus of the Assistant Director, Market Analysis is to support market assessment for new and existing programs and initiatives offered by the University, in collaboration with the Senior Assistant Director, Market Analysis. The Assistant Director conducts research and gathers data and information to assess the market viability of both proposed and existing on-ground and online programs offered by the University, including competitive scanning, profiling existing programs, gathering labor and industry data through publicly available and proprietary sources, and gathering existing degree conferral trends. The Assistant Director will compile this data into formats appropriate for internal reporting purposes, and will analyze key trends from the data in order to foster recommendations to relevant senior leaders and internal clients. The Assistant Director supports the design and build out of dashboards on the Tableau server site.

The Assistant Director will support both ad-hoc and standardized market research projects within the Office of Enrollment Research & Analytics. Standard, annual projects include a market assessment for all existing academic programs offered through the University, an annual competitive scan of peer and aspirational peer institutions, and an annual scan of competitive pricing. Ad hoc projects include market assessments for new programs and initiatives, assessment of potential university partners, market analyses for potential university geographic expansion, and focus groups or surveys of prospective students. The Assistant Director will also work on special projects as assigned.

2.Qualifications

The Assistant Director, Market Analysis will have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a related field, as well as one to three years' experience working in a related professional field such as consulting, market research, or product development and strategy. This role requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to respond quickly and effectively to internal client requests, including those of senior leaders. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are critical for success in this role. The Assistant Director must have a demonstrated ability to create and build coherent, well-written reports for the review of university and college leaders. While prior experience in higher education is not required, it is a plus. Regardless, the role requires an interest and ability to learn the dynamics of the higher education market and the nuances of related data, with the support and guidance of the Senior Assistant Director.

Specific requirements include:

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or a related (e.g. applied social sciences) field;.

  • One to three years' experience in analysis, consulting, market research, product development, marketing, and/or strategy roles;

  • Ability to work independently/autonomously and as a part of a team;

  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to strategically interpret findings and focus analysis and recommendations on implications and actions;

  • Solid written and oral communication skills;

  • Familiarity with market research and analysis methodologies, tools, and techniques - e.g., competitive scanning, interviewing, surveying, visualization, Google Trends, R, Python, Tableau, Alteryx, etc.;

  • Adept with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);

  • Strong data analysis skills;

  • Interest in the higher education market.

    3.Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

    Support Market Research and Analysis Activities 60%
  • Assess demand for new offerings and drive the repositioning/marketing optimization of new and existing offerings through secondary job market and higher education enrollment data analysis;
  • Lead competitive analysis and scanning related to new degree programs and geographies;
  • Gather pricing data for comparable programs offered by competitors;
  • Support primary and secondary research activities - e.g., interviews, surveys, and secondary data analysis;
  • Conduct proactive trend analyses/environmental scanning and special projects.


Compile Data into Reports for Internal Clients and Needs 40%
  • Review collected data and determine appropriate formatting for the information in word or power point documents or excel spreadsheets;
  • Leverage tools such as Tableau to visualize and report out on relevant market indicators. Assist in the design and build out of dashboards on the Tableau server site.
  • Assist on due diligence and special projects and the preparation of various whitepapers, reports, and business plans;
  • Support the creation of reports and memos to internal clients, including senior college, and university leaders.
