ATTENTION:

The Department of Music in the College of Arts and Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure track Assistant Professor of Music in the area of Artist/Teacher of Piano beginning August 2023. This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching applied lessons and undergraduate keyboard courses, working as a collaborative pianist with faculty and guest artist recitals, and service to the University and Community. The Department of Music will welcome candidates who expand the field toward diversity; successful candidates will have experience diversifying the repertoire of their students to include the music of women, black, asian, latine, and/or indigenous composers.





JOB DETAILS:

The primary responsibilities will be to teach Applied Piano and Collaborative Piano to music majors and minors along with related keyboard courses including C lass Piano, Functional Piano, Teaching from the Piano, and Piano Pedagogy courses. Additional teaching assignments may be chosen from courses related to the successful candidate’s interests and background and may also include teaching our College’s World of the Arts course, which serves our entire campus. In addition to teaching, candidates will work as a collaborative pianist with faculty and guest artist recitals and serve as a keyboard area coordinator. A strong reputation as a solo or collaborative pianist is required. The successful candidate must show significant experience as a teacher and demonstrate a strong commitment to innovative teaching; ideally, collaborative specialists will have considered projects that help develop new audiences. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research or creative activity agenda that engages undergraduate students, results in publications/performances, and contributes to advancing the Department, University, and the profession. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities, including departmental recruiting and participation with related professional organizations.





QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • DMA or Ph.D. in Piano (Piano Performance, Collaborative Piano, Piano Pedagogy) or closely related field
  • Demonstrated accomplishment and recognition as a Pianist
  • Ability to contribute to a positive collaborative environment
  • ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2023; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2024 in advance of their first scheduled review

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Full-Time teaching responsibilities include Applied and Collaborative Piano Lessons, Class Piano, Functional Piano and Piano Pedagogy courses and additional courses based on faculty expertise. Research expectations include publications, original compositions, performances, commercial recordings, or similar creative work in line with Music Department standards. In addition, faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities. This person will serve as coordinator of the keyboard area, which includes guidance regarding the use of our Steinway concert grands and harpsichord, overseeing the introduction of other keyboard instruments including organ, and the piano camp. Additionally, this person participates in departmental recruiting activities, committee service at the Departmental, College, and University levels as well as participation in community and professional organizations as relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interest.

The UW-Whitewater Music Department is a community of faculty and students dedicated to the study and performance of music. Our faculty are active performers and scholars united by a commitment to high-quality teaching. The Department has a special mission toward music education and a long track record of student winners of the Richard A Gaarder Award, which is given to the top music education student in the state. Students are passionate about learning their craft and work towards the highest standards of scholarship and performance. The Music Department annually touches thousands of people through its student and faculty concerts, which are presented in both our department’s beautiful Light Recital Hall and in the larger Young Auditorium, and through its service and outreach to the broader music education community in southeastern Wisconsin.

The Department of Music, with 32 full-or part-time faculty, is a division of the College of Arts and Communication and is an accredited member of NASM. The Department offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees with emphases in Music Education, Performance, and Theory/Composition; Certificates in Accompanying, Jazz, Theory, and History; and a Minor in Music.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $52,000- $53,000.
