Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree required, a minimum of 7 years’ experience in academia and at least 5 years of progressively responsible management experience, preferably in research or academic administration. Previous experience writing grant proposals.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Demonstrated experience managing staff, budgets, & federal & non-federal sponsored programs strongly preferred. Substantial writing experience, fundraising and grants management experience required. Exceptional oral & written communication skills. Demonstrated success leading collaborative projects & achieving exceptional operational results. PhD strongly preferred.

Position Description

This critical leadership role will develop new programs, strategies, & initiatives to advance the academic, research, and programmatic agenda of the Center and create a staffing structure to execute the work. Specifically, the ED will manage the following center activities:

(1) Conduct of an annual or semi-annual national representative web-based social scientific survey on issues of Race, Diversity and Democracy in America;

(2) Conduct of a bi-annual topical conference;

(3) Support a regular Workshop/speaker series;

(4) Provide space for affiliated faculty with research projects including post-doctoral researchers;

(5) Fund and support annual visiting scholars;

(6) Fund and support graduate student research.

(7) Partner with the Hutchins Center in the on-going operation of the journal the Du Bois Review: Social Science Research on Race .

This position will work closely with the Faculty Director in developing a strong program of stewardship activities including fostering and managing foundation and donor relationships and actively identifying funding opportunities that support the center’s mission and activities

The ED will coordinate and foster linkages with social sciences departments and centers and will maintain and build relationships with partner institutions and universities for the benefit of Harvard faculty, students, and staff of the Center.

The ED will develop grant proposals & reports & supervise the efforts of future CRISES staff in these endeavors. The ED will work closely with the Faculty Director to manage Center communications and content development, including website, annual reports, conference programs, correspondence, brochures, and other public-relations materials

The ED will assist with management of the Center's Advisory board and in consultation with the Director, will develop agendas or discussion items and ensures implementation of action items generated by the committee.

Finally, the ED will create and implement an administrative strategic plan, including a staffing strategy to support the center’s activities, work closely with the Faculty Director, Division Leadership and the FAS Office of Finance to develop and manage an annual operating budget for the new Center and will oversee all administrative operations in the support of the Center’s activities, including staff supervision and space use.

This involves developing a diverse and effective team; planning and delegating work effectively, ensuring that lines of responsibility and authority are clear and observed; communicating and monitoring performance expectations; motivating and developing direct reports; and ensuring compliance with Harvard and FAS policies and procedures. The ED represents the Center with FAS Administration and participates in FAS and University-wide committees and initiatives as appropriate.
