The Laboratory & Instructional Specialist supports learning and instruction in computer science courses and laboratories. They teach instructional labs and support student projects, may instruct introductory courses, and provide expertise across a broad swath of knowledge related to computer science. The position supports activities and teaching needs across multiple departments and is expected to work collaboratively with Engineering Computing Systems Technology (ECST) and across the College of Engineering, the College of Arts & Sciences Division of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, and College of Management. This position reports to the Chair of the Computer Science Department.

Job Duties:
1) Instruction. Teach, on average, the equivalent of three to six courses annually. The annual teaching load is determined by considerations of departmental needs between laboratory support and instruction.
2) Student Project Support. Provide support and expertise for student projects related to areas of their expertise, in courses such as senior design.
3) Laboratory Support. Provide technical support and consultation for laboratory activities and projects for undergraduate courses. As needed, collaborate with faculty to design or improve laboratory activities and associated instructional materials. Coordinate with TAs and instructors to ensure consistent student experience and grading policies across lab sections.
4) Inclusive Excellence. Actively contribute to Bucknell's commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.
5) Student Success. Actively contribute to the ecosystem of advising in support of student success.
6) Assessment and Evaluation. Undertake assessment and evaluation activities related to courses, labs and supervised student projects. Work across departments to share assessment data.

It is expected that the person in this position will stay well-informed regarding current computing software and hardware technologies, and work closely with ECST to identify and review needs for laboratory improvements and upgrades including maintenance in collaboration with college faculty and staff.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in computer science or related discipline.
  • Proficiency in Python, Java, and Unix systems programming in C.
  • Familiarity with relational databases.
  • Experience supporting undergraduate computing courses or laboratories.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of multiple teams.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively in a position requiring frequent multi-tasking.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, maintain detailed and accurate records, and prepare clear and concise written reports

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science or related discipline
  • Two or more years of successful experiences teaching undergraduate computer science courses and lab activities.
  • Familiarity with inclusive pedagogies and/or best practices for creating inclusive learning environments
  • Experience with multiple modern programming languages and libraries.

    Work Type:
    This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, scheduled during the academic year for 10 months, to begin prior to instruction of the Spring 2023 semester.

    This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.

    Salary Range:
    This is a Staff Exempt position with a hiring range of $52,500 - 78,750. The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
