Overview of Assistant Director, TRIO McNair Program

The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting with the management, administration, and implementation of the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program at Purdue University Northwest. The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program prepares and encourages PNW undergraduate students who are first-generation, low-income or from groups under-represented in graduate education for doctoral study. Scholars in the program benefit from a support system that enhances their academic and social experiences through summer research internships, seminars designed to prepare them for doctoral study and graduate admission assistance.

The McNair Achievement program is a federally funded TRIO program, currently funded through September 30, 2022. Continued funding is contingent upon a competitive application process.

Salary: Up to $48,000 depending upon experience

Duties and Responsibilities of of Assistant Director, TRIO McNair Program
  • Develop the curriculum and provide oversight of curriculum planning for both Academic Year and the Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) which includes graduate school preparation seminars, research seminars, and GRE preparation workshops
  • Evaluates these components for efficiency and impact on student outcomes and grant objectives
  • Develop, plan, and coordinate McNair program activities
  • Assists the Director with identifying curriculum and program priorities which contribute to the program calendar
  • Work with the Director in formulating and implementing policies and procedures, decision making, collection and assessment of data, and record management
  • Assure effective systems with eligibility, and determines program and/or participant needs.
  • Assist with recruitment of program participants
  • Assist in the selection process of McNair scholars by making presentations at various PNW events, contact prospective scholars, interview applicants, and rank applicants.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and manage student workers including summer staff

Education of Assistant Director, TRIO McNair Program
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s preferred
Experience of Assistant Director, TRIO McNair Program
  • Three years of experience working or participating in an educational opportunity program or similar program.
  • Experience with program planning, conducting and/or teaching research (methodologies, statistics, etc.), and graduate school advising is highly preferred

  • Demonstrated commitment to first-generation, low-income and/or individuals who have been traditionally underrepresented in graduate education
  • Ability to provide advising and support in graduate admissions, financial aid and literacy, and career exploration
  • Ability to plan and implement programs and activities related to post-baccalaureate achievement
  • Demonstrated skills in supervising or motivating students
  • Skilled in critical thinking and project management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, Outlook, and video conferencing software
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective partnerships with various stakeholders
