Job Description Summary
The Instructional Designer partners with faculty and other learning designers to create instructional materials and learning experiences for online, face-to-face and hybrid course delivery. The Instructional Designer provides expertise critical to creating innovative, inclusive, and standards-compliant courses that deepen student learning, improve the student experience for all students, and take full advantage of the affordances of modern digital learning pedagogies. Applying expertise in design and digital learning tools, the Instructional Designer will support faculty in all modalities in linking learning activities and assessments with the goals and objective for the course.

Essential Duties

  • Work collaboratively with faculty and other instructional designers to identify, create and update digital (or dynamic/engaging) and inclusive learning content for newly designed and/or revised online courses as well as courses in other modalities.
  • Identify requirements for multimedia technology necessary to produce and enhance web-based instruction including ensuring all materials are digitally accessible.
  • Serve as an expert in visual communication strategies for learning content creation. Translate instructor concepts and contextual material into a wide range of online interactive, video, graphical, or other illustrative resources.
  • Contribute to design, assessment, customization, and continuous improvement of learning design templates, using them to help faculty construct learning objects, modules, units, and courses in the learning management system.
  • Provide consulting and training to faculty on instructional design strategies, effective practices in teaching and learning, testing and academic integrity strategies, and synchronous and asynchronous learning approaches.
  • Support new initiatives shaped by the university strategic plan.
  • Support the division of Academic Affairs with other design, learning assessment, and analytical projects as needed.
  • Evaluate courses, as directed by Academic Leadership, using evaluation resources such as Quality Matters (QM).
  • Assure compliance: ensure media content is digitally accessible and meets the WCAG 2.1 AA standards and complies with licensing and copyright laws and regulations.
  • Work individually and collaboratively to meet deadlines and expectations set for course design projects.
  • Organize, prioritize, and schedule multiple work assignments to enable positive contributions to project teams.
  • Adhere to communications and transparency guidelines, as established by project leads and managers.
  • Respond in a timely and professional manner to requests for information.
  • Attend and be a positive contributor at check-in and team meetings.
  • Stay up-to-date on new research, emerging trends and technologies related to learning solutions development and instructional design.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree required in instructional design, curriculum & instruction, adult education, or related field
  • At least one year of experience working as an instructional designer or similar role
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current instructional theories and principles applicable to web-based instruction
  • Proficiency with eLearning authoring tools like Articulate Storyline/360 to develop interactive content
  • Knowledge of video, audio and digital production (recording, editing, file compression). Basic image manipulation proficiency preferred: InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop
  • Ability to create a vision and then transform that vision into engaging resources that enhance learning. Solutions must be comprehensive, creative and geared for graphics, video and multimedia production and individual must have ability to produce said solutions
  • Commitment to customer service and team-oriented environment

  • Strong attention to detail and organization

Work Environment

  • Typical office setting with extensive sitting and computer work
  • Ability to travel around campus for meetings and other work related events
