The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a Research Technologist in the Pain Research Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, the candidate is responsible for performing routine laboratory duties and experiments and mouse colony management. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention. Exercises basic computer skills and learns and applies task-specific software necessary to perform laboratory functions. Communicates and cooperates effectively with the faculty investigator and other laboratory personnel, to facilitate the research efforts of the laboratory and maintain a collegial and collaborative workplace. Communicates effectively and professionally with vendors, administrative personnel, and other Johns Hopkins colleagues.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments associated with molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Cell Biology.
  • These may require other associated specialized laboratory methods including tissue culture techniques.
  • Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and thermocycler.
  • Following experimental protocols, performs general mouse husbandry (setting up mating's, weaning, tissue harvest for genotyping, ear tagging), monitors animals and maintains health record, performs mouse behavioral assays, and sacrifices and dissects animal tissues as required in accordance with USDA, AALAC and IACUC guidelines.
  • Prepares tissue for study utilizing histochemical techniques.
  • Operates lab computers for data entry, mouse colony tracking, purchasing.
  • Maintains accurate data records. Keeps the laboratory clean and in working order.
  • Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
