The Associate Director, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), is responsible for oversight on the Glendale, AZ campus in four main research areas, including: 1) Biosafety 2) administration for institutional committees (e.g. IRB, IACUC, Biosafety, IBC, Radiation Safety), 3) research compliance and 4) general department operations.  The Associate Director provides supervision and development for direct reports in the Glendale campus ORSP.  The Associate Director serves as a resource to faculty and staff, and reports to the Assistant Vice President of Research.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and support the Glendale ORSP staff as assigned and act as a liaison with other areas to resolve research-related issues
  • Directs, plans, implements, and makes recommendations regarding ongoing changes in the Glendale ORSP based on need, changes in volume and other influences
    • Responsible for Glendale ORSP budgets (development, submission, and order approvals)
    • Responsible for management of annual Kenneth A. Suarez Research Day on the Glendale campus
  • Develops and presents operational and project plans of the Glendale ORSP using acceptable management methods
  • Administer intramural funding programs on the Glendale campus, e.g, Faculty Seed Grants, One Health Grants, and Improving Health Care Delivery Grants and assist all colleges with their intramural grant programs
    • Responsible for budgets, and approval of expenditures to ensure alignment with institutional use of intramural funds
    • Represent research at all college Research Facilitation Grant meetings
  • Operations and administration of IACUC, IRB, Biosafety, IBC & Radiation Safety support
    • Ensure sufficient operational support and procedures for Glendale IACUC, IRB, Biosafety, IBC and Radiation Safety
  • General Department Operations:
    • Oversight for general office operations assigned to MWU’s Research Coordinator including gas tank, liquid nitrogen, and safety-related orders for research laboratories, and maintenance of MSDSOnline.
  • Oversight and implementation of research compliance on MWU’s Glendale campus
    • Identifies compliance issues and establish procedures that foster research performance compliant with federal regulations, state laws and internal policies.
    • Responsible for review and approval of all Materials Transfer Agreements for the Glendale campus
    • Assists with the development, implementation, maintenance, and/or enhancement of a wide variety of research compliance issues, with emphasis on:
      • Responsible Conduct of Research
      • Biosafety
      • rDNA
      • Laboratory training
      • Time and Effort Reporting
      • Export Controls
      • Other areas as instructed by the supervisor
  • Notifies Assistant Vice President of Research of potential non-compliance issues, evaluates and makes recommendations prior to implementation of new approaches
  • Develops and supports effective lines of communication and advocacy which promote the reporting of research compliance concerns, to ensure that all of MWU’s research compliance programs have adequate financial and infrastructure resources to perform the functions assigned to them.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and regulatory agency requirements
  • Other duties, as assigned by the supervisor

Institution-specific training will be provided, however, a strong understanding of research administration and computers is required.  Part of the position requires learning some of the unique processes that both the AZ and IL campuses have in place. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Biosafety knowledge as it pertains to research labs
  • A service-oriented approach towards addressing issues
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • The ideal candidate will have a wide range of experience in the areas described, including expertise in at least one of the areas

Education and/or Experience                                                   

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s or higher preferred
  • 7-10 years’ minimum experience with research administration in a higher education environment with progressive responsibilities or Associate or Full Professor status in lieu of research administration experience
  • Must have excellent communication, leadership and written skills
  • Must have the ability to advance multiple projects simultaneously

Computer Skills                                               

Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). 

Language Skills                                                

Intermediate skills:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Reasoning Ability                                             

Intermediate skills:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Mathematical Ability

Intermediate skills:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interests, commissions and proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.  Ability to apply statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
