Job Description

The MFA Program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis seeks a visiting poet for the spring semester of 2023. The ideal candidate will be prepared to mentor a diverse student population, and to foster a welcoming and inclusive culture in their classes and in the MFA program. They will be able to translate their own ideas and experience into valuable insights for students, and they will be able to tailor their teaching to the needs of individuals in the class. We seek a colleague who views mentoring as a crucial element in the development of student writers.

During the semester, the visiting poet will:
  • teach two classes: a graduate poetry workshop and an intermediate level undergraduate poetry course
  • offer a reading and community craft workshop at the High Low, the Kranzberg Arts Foundation’s literary arts cafe in midtown St. Louis attend student and faculty events
  • hold office hours and advise students as appropriate
  • serve on thesis committees for graduating MFA candidates
Qualifications
  • Significant literary publications, including at least one full-length collection of poetry from a nationally recognized press.
  • An appropriate terminal degree (MFA or PhD)
  • Experience teaching at the university level

Salary

Salary for the semester is $32,000. (This position does not come with a housing allowance or benefits.)
