Program Overview:

The Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program is a TRIO Program funded by the US Department of Education. VUB is designed to motivate and assist veterans in the development of academic and other requisite skills necessary for acceptance and success in a program of postsecondary education. The program provides assessment and enhancement of basic skills through counseling, mentoring, tutoring, and academic instruction in the core subject areas. The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs.

The VUB Students Training for Academic Readiness and Success (STARS), provides services to participants in the Tulsa and Muskogee areas.

Position Overview:

This position is a field position that will not be permanently officed on the UCO Campus. This position is expected to operate in-person daily in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and its surrounding communities, as well as in and around Muskogee, Oklahoma, and once a month at the VUB Hub (main office) located at the University of Central Oklahoma Edmond campus. On assigned working days at the VUB Hub, travel will be reimbursed calculated from Tulsa, Oklahoma or Muskogee, Oklahoma. The ideal candidate would live in one of these areas and/or be familiar with these areas to help with community connections.

Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm, some evenings and weekends.

A valid driver’s license is required, as well as transportation and/or the ability to travel to and from community partner locations and recruiting events.
This position is a grant-funded position which can be renewed yearly for up to 5 years but is not guaranteed. This grant cycle ends on August 31, 2027.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

The VUB STARS Outreach Coordinator performs the following:
  • Recruit and coordinate the recruitment of participants for TRIO VUB STARS
  • Coordinate the development and/or preparation of informational materials relevant to VUB STARS participants.
  • Coordinates and implements various recruitment programs and marketing strategies for special events relating to veteran populations to fulfillment of recruitment efforts.
  • Coordinate student-related programs and events for veterans interested in attending college to include (but not limited to) open-houses, award ceremonies, career days, and student organizations.
  • Drive a 15-passenger van to transport participants to program events.
  • Coordinate academic workshops and online classroom activities
  • Assist VUB STARS participants with admissions and enrollment services
  • Create and facilitate educational program activities
  • Provide assistance in course selection, advisement, and academic coaching
  • Document unit-level services provided for each participant to chart data for monitoring project objectives and goals
  • Meets with participants on a regular basis to track their academic progress.
  • Develop intentional relationships in the community to create partnerships in order to discover ways to successfully guide veteran participants to reach their educational/career goals.
  • Review and maintain VUB STARS participant records and generate reports for the Project Director.
  • Assist in educational-related activities related to the enrollment and admission process.
  • Maintains VUB STARS website and electronic documents.
  • Converts manual records to a computerized based information system.
  • Manages personal data in accordance with federal human protections certifications requirements.
  • Use technology and social media as a means to engage and inform current and potential program participants.
  • Connect with local organizations/community veteran mentors to support VUB STARS participant programming.
  • Develops and implements educational programs by following up on existing initiatives and identifying new outreach opportunities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications/Experience Required:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, or in related field. Experience working with disadvantaged and underrepresented populations in an educational setting. Background similar to TRIO participants. Valid driver’s license.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred:

U.S. Military Veteran or previous work related to serving veterans. One-year work experience in a TRIO program or two or more years as a participant in a TRIO program. Computer proficiency, preferably in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). A strong understanding of the various forms of educational benefits for Veterans.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to use tact and diplomacy in working with students, alumni, faculty/staff and employers. Ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and interact professionally with relevant segments of the University community. Project management skills.
