Overview
This is a 20-hour per week position that will entail working variable hours as needed to meet the needs of research projects.

The Center offers a wide range of research services, housing expertise in multiple research methods and establishing an IT infrastructure to support varied research needs across the university to enhance health disparities research. The Center is designed to support research projects led by SDSU investigators and affiliated partner organizations, including those funded by the Center as Research Projects or Pilot Projects and those who access our services through a cost recovery system.

We are seeking a part time Phlebotomist/Clinical Lab Technician to staff the Center's biospecimen collection lab and provide laboratory services to SDSU and partner researchers, including collection, processing, storage, and databasing of clinical/biological samples. The incumbent will play a key role in developing procedures governing the collection, codifying/labeling, scanning, processing, tracking, and storage of critical project samples. They will work under the direction of the Biomedical Methods Group Co-Leader and Research Operations Manager. With the Research Operations Manager and Biomedical Lab Coordinator, they will develop an infrastructure and processes for specimen collection and handling and consult with researchers from varied disciplines to provide services to meet their project needs. The Phlebotomist/Clinical Lab Technician is expected to routinely communicate with Spanish speaking research participants for specimen collection activities and may be required to work evenings and weekends as we work with different projects.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for organizational processes, is interested in collaborating with researchers across a wide variety of disciplines and possesses the motivation and ability to work independently to manage the Center's biospecimen collection laboratory. Responsibilities
Phlebotomist/Laboratory Technician Duties 90%

• Establish and maintain operations of the Center’s biospecimen collection laboratory
• Assist Research Operations Manager in developing and maintaining protocols for laboratory processes and biospecimen collection, handling, coding, transport, tracking, and storage
• Supporting research projects with biospecimen component
• Performing the following duties in strict adherence to laboratory standards and project procedures:
  • Preparing participant materials for appointments
  • Explaining procedures to participants and preparing participants for a blood draw;
  • Drawing blood by skin punctures and venipuncture using aseptic techniques;
  • Verifying participant identities for correct labeling of biological samples;
  • Organizing and maintaining specimen collection supplies and equipment;
  • Analyzing biological specimens using correct testing equipment;
  • Preparing specimens for transport or storage, coding, labeling, and tracking vials accurately;
  • Centrifuging or performing chemistry analysis of biological samples;
  • Maintaining sterile laboratory environment, avoiding cross-contamination;
  • Upholding human subjects research confidentiality protections and preserving medical privacy in compliance with HIPAA;
  • Operating scientific equipment and providing support as needed;
  • Updating participant research records and/or EHRs and tracking for longitudinal studies
  • Anthropometric assessment including blood pressure, pulse, and respiration;
• Providing excellent customer service to research participants in English and Spanish
• Ensuring adherence to lab procedures and project protocols, on the part of oneself and others, by regularly conducting quality assurance and safety tests
• Performing the proper handling and transport of biological samples for processing and storage, including for instances when specimens are collected outside of working hours
• Developing and implementing organizational processes/procedures and systems for specimen labeling, sorting, storage and tracking
• Maintaining lab databases, protocols, and specific equipment
• Meeting compliance requirements of the laboratories with regulations and requirements of the SDSU Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), OSHA bloodborne pathogens act, handling dry ice, and all County and State regulatory requirements
• Performing proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials
• Consulting with researchers seeking services to identify the appropriate biological specimens
• Collaborating in the creation and maintenance of a database that correlates biological samples with other participant data and accurately recording information into appropriate databases
• Replenishing and ordering lab supplies, anticipating supply needs based on research activities
• Preparing buffers and solutions
• Maintaining general lab and workspace cleanliness adhering to highest standards
• Coordinating the intake process and task management for biospecimen collection laboratory services, including development and management of scopes of work, timelines, effort tracking, etc.
• Informing the development and implementation of recharge services related to the Center’s biomedical laboratory and specimen collection
• Maintaining routine communication with supervisors and service customers to ensure coordination and implementation of assigned activities are on target and within established deadlines
• Communicating effectively with researchers across multiple disciplines, including those without knowledge in the biological sciences

Other Duties 10%

• Responding to emails and inquiries in a timely and professional manner
• Attending Center team meetings and trainings, classes and other meetings as requested
• Contributing to the annual progress report
• Participating in Center evaluation activities as required
• Supervising students and/or volunteer interns assisting with tasks as needed
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalency
• 6-12 months of related experience in a healthcare setting or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-1), as defined by the California Department of Health Services, which permits the incumbent to perform skin punctures and venipuncture.

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive venipuncture experience in a hospital, clinical or technical research setting
• Previous experience with difficult draw/veins and timed-blood draws
• Registered Nurse (RN) licensure highly desirable
• Bilingual in English and Spanish (speaking, reading, writing)
• CPR/AED Certification
