Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Provost

Montana State University-Northern (Northern), located in north-central Montana, seeks a Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Provost who will embrace Northern’s commitment to its unique academic and hands-on learning environment. Northern provides its students with higher education for professional and technical careers and serves an area that includes four Native American reservations along with Montana’s smallest and largest towns. The University functions as an important cultural resource and continuing education center.
 

The Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Provost (VCAA/Provost) will lead the institution in providing well-educated graduates who are ready to take their skills, competencies, and knowledge into the workforce. Northern seeks an education visionary committed to enhancing the economic and social mobility of our student population.
 

The VCAA/Provost will oversee the planning, implementation, and assessment of academic programming. This programming will meet the needs of students, industry, and geographic region; will provide academic facilities that allow faculty and students to access current technologies in aesthetically pleasing and safe spaces; will support professional development for faculty; and will deliver scheduling so that students can achieve their goals and complete their degrees in a timely manner (Strategic Plan). In order to present an educational experience that enriches student and faculty lives, the VCAA/Provost will collaborate with industry, alumni, community, and campus partners.
 

As a campus leader, the VCAA/Provost will support the strategic goals of academic affairs, student affairs, enrollment management, athletics, administration and finance, and facility services. Representing Northern, the VCAA/Provost will encourage faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders to support one another in achieving the All ‘N’ Strategic Plan 2021-2031 goals.
 

In Academic Affairs, experienced academic deans, knowledgeable college chairs, and engaged faculty provide the foundation for MSU-Northern’s mission fulfillment and the institution’s commitment to students. In addition, the Office of Teaching and Learning Excellence (OTLE) supports faculty sharing best practices in curriculum development, pedagogy, academic program review, and educational technology.
 

Across the institution, federally funded TRiO Grant Student Support Services (SSS) serves first generation students, economically challenged students, and students with disabilities. The Little River Institute (LRI), under a federal Native American Serving Non-Tribal Institution grant, provides culturally appropriate academic and personal support for American Indian students and offers professional development opportunities for MSU-Northern faculty and staff. Tutoring Central involves faculty in tutoring decisions and training, along with peer tutors working with students. Student Affairs programming and residence life offer holistic educational approaches to student development and engagement. Athletic teams and coaches work to ensure academic success for MSUN student-athletes. The VCAA/Provost will experience an institution that supports its students in meeting their academic and personal goals.

The Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Provost will be innovative and strong in creating compelling strategies to meet today’s higher education challenges. The VCAA/Provost will support the students whom Northern serves and will grow academic programs that allow students to successfully thrive in the ever-changing work world and in their lives beyond work.

Core Duties

The Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Provost (VCAA/Provost) works closely with the Chancellor and serves as the Chief Academic Officer (CAO), providing vision and leadership to the institution’s three colleges: College of Arts, Sciences, and Education; College of Health Sciences; and College of Technical Sciences. The VCAA/Provost oversees the Registrar and Student Records Office; the Vande Bogart Library; the Office of Teaching and Learning Excellence (OTLE); and Veteran’s Upward Bound (VUB) Grant. The VCAA/Provost serves as the university’s Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) and represents the institution’s academic programming within the Montana University System.
