Job Description

The Director will lead the School in coordinating and further developing our dynamic academic and practitioner education programs and our substantial endowment funds. The Director will also work with the Stene Distinguished Chair in Public Administration to provide intellectual leadership for the School. We welcome candidates with diverse scholarly perspectives on public organizations and with administrative experience in leading vibrant academic programs.

The mission of SPAA is to prepare exceptional leaders for public service who provide solutions to the most pressing community challenges at all levels of governance. With roots in local government management and urban policy, we advance the public good, democratic values, and ethical public management principles. With a presence on three campuses, our School features two undergraduate programs (Public Administration and Law & Society) plus three graduate programs (Master of Public Administration, Master of Urban Planning, Ph.D. in Public Administration) and robust professional education programs through the Public Management Center. Administrative service – 60%
The Director will provide administrative leadership for the School, coordinating and leading its various programs and developing its resources. The Director will provide administrative leadership within the School, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University, and profession. The Director will represent and lead the School in its relations with relevant professional associations and in other related activities with the School’s large and vibrant alumni network, non-profit organizations, and government agencies.

Research – 20%
The Director will have an active scholarly research agenda in the area of Public Affairs, broadly understood, sharing their scholarship with colleagues and the public through publications and presentations.

Teaching – 20%
The Director will teach two courses per year. Specific course assignments and locations are at the discretion of the Director. The Director will participate in student advising and mentoring.

  1. Doctorate or comparable degree in public administration, urban planning, law or a related field.
  2. Evidence of successful administrative leadership in an academic setting.
  3. Evidence of research excellence, including an active research agenda in public affairs, broadly defined.
  4. Evidence of excellence in teaching, including educating and mentoring students or practitioners.
  5. Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as defined by the University of Kansas, including in research, teaching, and/or community engagement.
  6. Evidence of effective engagement with external audiences.
  7. Willingness to contribute to and lead administrative initiatives and programs in the School of Public Affairs and Administration, including fund raising and public relations.

Position Overview

The University of Kansas seeks a Director for the School of Public Affairs and Administration, at the rank Full Professor, to begin August 2023. This position is a full-time, academic-year appointment. We seek an exceptional colleague with a record of research excellence and demonstrated administrative leadership to join and lead our School. The successful candidate will lead the School’s continuing growth as one of the country’s top schools of public affairs and administration, with respected, nationally-ranked academic programs, including #1 local government management programs.
