Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Director of Campus Security.

Reporting to the Director of Campus Security, the assistant director has oversight of seven patrol officers, serves as the acting director when needed, shares on-call duties with the director, works in Dispatch as needed, and serves as the Security educational and community resource officer for the university. This includes developing and directing the selection, training, and evaluation of patrol officers, and developing, implementing, and evaluating educative and preventative programs for a variety of campus constituents. The assistant director also responds to emergencies, incidents, or dispatches as required; conducts investigations and completes follow-up reports on criminal and non-criminal incidents utilizing best practices; and serves as the events coordinator for the department. This position is required to work during inclement weather and emergency situations.

Successful applicants must have an associate’s degree, minimum of three years of related experience, and ability to achieve and maintain “Campus Security Officer” certification in accordance with Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) regulations. Applicants must be a United States citizen or legal United States resident eligible for employment in the United States, be at least 21 years of age, and possess a valid United States driver’s license with minimal violations.

Also needed are proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office; excellent verbal and written communication skills; attentive listening skills; understanding of and ability to use/engage on social media platforms; strong valuing and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusivity; ability and desire to work with diverse populations; and ability to present information to different constituents. Physical demands include walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time, and ability to defend oneself and/or others in hostile, challenging situations.

Preferred candidates will have a bachelor’s degree; previous law enforcement, campus security, private security, related military, or educational/community outreach experience; and supervisory and/or training experience in a related field.
