POSITION DETAILS

 

The City College of New York seeks a creative and experienced Associate Dean of Libraries and Chief Librarian to direct eight active libraries: the Morris Raphael Cohen Library (main library), seven divisional or institute libraries (Architecture Library, Center for Worker Education Library, College Archives and Special Collections, Music Library, CUNY School of Medicine Library, Science and Engineering Library, and the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Archives and Library). The Chief Librarian also oversees the library for the CUNY School of Public Health.

 

 

 

Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs of The City College of New York, the Associate Dean of Libraries will provide strategic direction and vision for the Library. In collaboration with the University Librarian and other CUNY library leaders, the Associate Dean participates in the development of cooperative library services within CUNY and beyond. The Associate Dean serves as advocate and spokesperson for the City College Libraries on campus, locally, statewide and nationwide.

 

 

 

The Associate Dean will be responsible for the organization, administration, operation, planning, and evaluation of library services, physical facilities, collections, budgets, and the professional development and evaluation of faculty and staff. A transparent communicator and a collaborative partner, the Associate Dean will provide strategic direction and vision for the Libraries, as well as facilitate the implementation of its core services and long-term plans. As the Library’s representative on College-wide and University committees, the Associate Dean is the Chief advocate for recognizing the Libraries’ value and impact on learning and student success, research productivity, and campus engagement. The Associate Dean will also develop and support strategic relationships with stakeholders on campus and across CUNY.

 

 

 

Within a collegial and cooperative work environment, the Associate Dean will oversee the selection, mentoring, evaluating, professional development, promotion and retention of the Library’s faculty and staff in a framework of shared faculty governance and collective bargaining. The Associate Dean will guide faculty through the process of promotion and tenure.

Founded in 1847, the City College of New York (CCNY) is a public institution with public purpose, producing citizens who make an impact on the cultural, social, and economic vitality of New York, the nation, and the world. A High-Research Institution located in Harlem, we are a Hispanic-Serving and Minority-Serving Institution, and 66% of our full- time undergraduates attend the college tuition free.

 

 

 

The City College Library System is the largest within CUNY. On the Harlem campus it comprises eight divisions across five buildings and the affiliated CUNY Dominican Studies Library & Archive. The City College Downtown (Cunard Building, 25 Broadway) houses the Center for Worker Education Library. The libraries act as a crossroads of life on both campuses, offering a wide array of services to all members of the campus community, and providing leadership within the urban University in scholarship and research support, quality learning, enriched discourse and equity of access for diverse constituencies. The libraries serve approximately 16,000 graduate and undergraduate students and over 600 full-time faculty in all major disciplines and including five professional schools. The libraries own more than 1.6 million print volumes and provide access to more than 200,000 electronic books and 77,000 electronic journals. As a federal depository since 1884, the libraries hold more than 230,000 government documents. Through its collection, technology, physical and virtual spaces, and our approximately 40 full-time and 100 part-time faculty and staff, the Libraries are dedicated to the education of the whole person, fostering information literacy and communication skills for academic and career success, and preparing a diverse population for service and leadership to our city, nation, and the world.

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan.  All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

 

 

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

 

A Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution, with a second graduate degree is required, as well as 10 years of relevant experience. A doctoral degree is preferred.

 

 

 

Vaccine Requirement:

 

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
