The Biological Sciences Department at SUNY Cortland seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin August 2023. We are a large and diverse department that offers four undergraduate majors: Biology, Biomedical Science, Conservation Biology and Adolescent Education in Biology. Our faculty contribute to the College’s values of inclusive excellence through (1) innovative teaching, (2) research and/or scholarship that engages undergraduates, (3) service to the department and college, and (4) providing academic advisement and mentoring to/for all students.

Major Responsibilities
  • Teach majors-level Human Anatomy, participate in the teaching of non-majors Human Anatomy and Physiology, and offer a biology elective in an area of expertise (such as pathology, developmental biology, human disease, or cancer biology) that strengthens the Biomedical Science major within the department. Please note: other biomedical research foci will be considered if area of research complements existing faculty specialties.
  • Develop an active research program that involves undergraduates and has the potential for external funding.
  • Provide service to the department and College and participate in advisement and mentorship of students with diverse backgrounds.
Functional and Supervisory Relationships

Assistant professors will mentor undergraduate students in research, supervise internships, participate in service activities for the department and campus community, and advise students in the Biological Sciences.
Faculty members report directly to the academic chair of the Biological Sciences Department in the School of Arts and Sciences.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or doctoral candidate, all but dissertation ( ABD ) (with degree conferral by August 2023) in biology or a related field.
  • Evidence of effective teaching
  • Scholarly productivity with peer-reviewed publications including a detailed plan for engaging undergraduates in the research
  • Evidence of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Research interest in pathology, anatomy, developmental biology, human disease, or cancer biology, or other biomedical research foci may be considered.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with postdoctoral experience.
