Job Summary:

Barnard's Department of Residential Life and Housing invites applications for a Senior Associate Director of Residential Life. Barnard's Residential Life and Housing oversee approximately 2,400 undergraduate students living within 12 residence halls comprised of traditional and suite-style housing.
Job Description:
Reporting to the Director of Residential Life and Housing, the Senior Associate Director of Residential Life is responsible for the development of a comprehensive residential education program that includes the coordination and implementation of student learning, staff training and development, and crisis management within the residence halls. The Senior Associate Director of Residential Life is expected to work with the Director to assist with strategic planning, policy development and implementation, and operational management. The Senior Associate Director of Residential Life is provided an on-campus apartment and is expected to make it their primary residence.

- Oversee a comprehensive residential education program, which
includes programmatic and project management of staff selection,
training, the residential learning model, academic and leadership
programs, special interest housing, and living-learning community
environments
- Supervise, develop, evaluate, and train professional
Residential Life staff, including direct supervision of Community
Directors and indirect supervision of Residence Hall
Coordinators
- Chair/Co-chair a departmental committee and provide
leadership and active participation in departmental functional and
project-based assignments. Represent the department on College
committees and in other planning capacities or in the absence of
the Director
- Manage specific area-related budget lines and monthly
reconciliation of funds
- Respond to, manage, and provide guidance to staff members on
managing residential life crisis response, problem resolution, and
student support, and manage parent and community
relations
- Take part in a 24/7 on-call duty rotation and oversee the
implementation of duty and crisis response protocols, serving as a
consultative resource for on-call staff, responding to emergencies,
and communicating with College staff as necessary
- Facilitate the student conduct process as
needed
- Communicate with students, parents, faculty, and
stakeholders regarding Residential Life processes and concerns as
needed
- Assist in the management of the residential life and
staffing aspects of the Summer Housing
- Implement and evaluate assessment measures for the
department and develop related reports, planning, and action items
as a result
- Work closely with campus partners (Student Experience and
Engagement, Academic Affairs, Primary Care Health Services, Furman
Counseling, CARDS, CARES, etc.) to develop positive and effective
relationships aimed at enhancing and developing the Barnard
residential student experience
- Attend relevant state, regional and national conferences to
stay current with national best practices
- Serve as a mandated reporter and assist in reporting
incident information as needed including allegations regulated
under Title IX
- Other duties as assigned
Additional Information
- The Senior Associate Director of Residential Life will keep
regular office hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:00 PM). Evening and
weekend commitments will be required to fulfill the duties of the
position from time to time.
- This position is considered to be an essential personnel
position for the department, and as such, the Senior Associate
Director of Residential Life may be required to report to
work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and/or the campus
is working on limited operations in an emergency.
- This is a twelve-month position. The Senior Associate
Director of Residential Life is expected to make the on-campus
apartment their primary residence.
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:
Knowledge and Skills Considered Essential for Success:
- Strong management experience inclusive of professional staff
training, development, and supervision
- Ability to manage and respond to complex crisis situations,
advise on best practices in student support, and coordinate campus
resources
- Strong oral and written communication skills; excellent
computer/technology-related skills with a focus on database or case
management software (i.e. Advocate/StarRez)
- Knowledge in the areas of curriculum development and
implementation, crisis intervention, conflict mediation, student
and leadership development theory, student conduct administration,
academic support, and safety programs
- Demonstrated commitment to sustainability, equity, and
social justice; experience working with and supporting the needs of
a diverse student population, and engaging students and staff on
issues of diversity and social justice
- Ability to work effectively and positively in an environment
characterized by change, including the ability to acquire new
knowledge and utilize that information to develop new programs and
services.
- Knowledge of FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act, and other state and
federal laws as they relate to residential life
administration.
- Engagement in the field of student affairs and higher
education administration with an interest and willingness to learn,
implement, and share best practices and new
approaches.
- Sensitivity and flexibility in dealing with complex problems
and situations. Ability to work autonomously and cooperatively
within the department and the larger College
community.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in education, student affairs, or related
field and 6-8 years of related experience demonstrating progressive
responsibility
- Prior experience in residential life or campus housing
required
