Biomedical Ethics and Society Faculty Position

The Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society at Vanderbilt University Medical Center invites applications for a faculty position in the School of Medicine for candidates with MD, PhD, JD, or other terminal degree.  The Department of primary academic appointment will be determined by clinical/professional discipline. Salary, academic rank, and academic track will be based on experience and qualifications.

The mission of the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society is to provide leadership in education, research, and clinical service at Vanderbilt University Medical Center concerning the ethical, legal, and social dimensions of medicine, health care, research, and health policy.  The Center is committed to multi-disciplinary, collaborative exploration of the individual and social values, cultural dynamics, and legal and professional standards that characterize and influence clinical practice and biomedical research.  The Center aims to be a catalyst for collaboration in teaching, research, and practice at Vanderbilt and to contribute to scholarship and policy making from the local to the international level.

This position requires advanced training in some aspect of ethical, legal, and social implications of health care and research. Focused interest in translational research ethics is an asset. The faculty member will be expected to become an integral part of the Center. To that end, he or she will be expected to develop a portfolio of research activities in support of the Center’s academic mission.  The scholarship of the Center can be grouped into the following broad areas - clinical ethics, research ethics, public health ethics, and the implications of advances in genomics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.  The Center is devoted to scholarship and research that can meet future clinical and public health care needs while promoting the public´s acceptance and trust in research.  There are many opportunities to engage in collaborative research throughout the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Along with maintaining an independent research portfolio, this faculty member will have the opportunity to bring methodological research expertise to bear in collaborative synergies with colleagues in Surgical Ethics and Pediatric Ethics within the Center as well as Health Services Research colleagues in the Institute for Medicine and Public Health as well as throughout VUMC.

There are numerous opportunities to participate in educational activities throughout the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt University campus.  Faculty members in the center are engaged in undergraduate education, graduate education, and undergraduate and graduate medical education in classroom settings as well as in one-on-one mentoring and less formal settings. Biomedical ethics content is an important component of the medical school curriculum at Vanderbilt and a valued contributor to a variety of programs across the campus seeking to discuss the topical questions challenging medical practice, medical science, and medical technology today.
