The School of Science and Engineering (SSE) at the University of Missouri – Kansas City seeks applicants for a tenure-track position in the Civil Engineering Program within the school’s rapidly-growing Division of Natural and Built Environments (NBE). This multidisciplinary structure creates opportunities for inspired new research, collaborative opportunities and experiences, and interdisciplinary course options for broader learning engagement.
The position seeks applicants whose primary research areas include water resources with preference given to those that specialize in urban stormwater and/or environmental stormwater engineering applications. However, candidates with research and teaching interests in all areas of water resources engineering will be considered, including surface and groundwater hydrology, hydraulics, water resources management, and hydrological modeling. The Program is especially interested in candidates that can collaborate strategically with current expertise within the division, centers, college, and state. Kansas City is uniquely situated in a thriving and growing urban stormwater initiative region, which is sustained through private and public partnerships, and regulatory and stakeholder convergence. Candidates are sought that can integrate well within these established partnerships. Applicants will be prioritized according to how well they would complement and expand current NBE research strengths in structural engineering, geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, materials, and construction management.
Successful candidates will be able to teach undergraduate Civil Engineering courses, and should have particular interest in teaching courses in water resources including introductory level fluid mechanics, hydraulic engineering, hydrology, and urban stormwater. Candidates interested in teaching introductory level environmental engineering courses in addition to water resources are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in those who have the ability to teach a diverse student body, including those from underrepresented groups.
Successful candidates will be expected to: (1) have a strong commitment to quality undergraduate and graduate engineering education and supporting a diverse student body; (2) teach courses in the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs; (3) develop and maintain an outstanding record of scholarly activity, including an externally-funded research program; (4) engage in departmental, school, and/or university service activities appropriate to the position; and (5) advance the goals and strategic plan of SSE and UMKC.
- BS and PhD in Civil Engineering, or a closely-related discipline, ABDs will be considered.
- Ability to obtain professional licensure.
- Undergraduate teaching experience or demonstrated potential to teach at the undergraduate level.
Full Time/Part Time
The position is a full-time, benefit-eligible, academic year (9 month) tenure-track or tenure eligible appointment with the possibility to start September 1, 2023 or January 1, 2024.
Salary is negotiable and commensurate with rank, experience and credentials.

The Civil Engineering Program offers an ABET-accredited BS degree, MS degree, and participates in UMKC’s interdisciplinary PhD program. Civil Engineering currently has 5 tenured faculty members, nearly 30 teaching and adjunct faculty, over 400 undergraduate students, and over 60 graduate students. The engineering student body has grown by over 30% in the last five years, with further increases in enrollment expected for Fall 2023 and beyond. Numerous research programs within SSE will expand into the new Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise and Research Center, a $32 million state-of-the-art facility opened in Fall 2020.
