Lead Bioinformatics Programmer

Summary

The Lead Bioinformatics Programmer will assist investigators in the Texas Children's Microbiome Center with data analysis, database construction, and data presentations in areas of microbiology, microbiome science, metagenomics, and bacterial genetics. This programmer will apply existing custom bioinformatics software as well as prepare detailed specifications and algorithms from which programs will be written. Will design, code, test, debug, and maintain programs for bioinformatics applications as well as research, assess, import, configure, and customize third-party bioinformatics software.

Job Duties

• Applies existing custom bioinformatics software to both well-defined and complex problems.
• Advises on hardware and software decisions related to efficient application of implemented software.
• Provides technical guidance and work direction to staff and trainees.
• Manages research information technology and bioinformatics efforts including the laboratory information system (LIMS) supporting the Texas Children's Microbiome Center (TCMC) and the Medical Metagenomics Laboratory.
• Ensures that the hardware and software resources are in place, up-to-date and with sufficient connectivity to serve the changing needs of the TCMC.
• Participates in funded research projects, clinical research and development, clinical diagnostics, and oversees training and provides support on bioinformatics applications for staff and trainees.
• Presents data at local and national meetings and serves as co-author on publications.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Biological Science, or a related field.
• Five years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Masters in a biological or computer science
• Five or more years in a research or clinical setting related in the field of molecular biology
• LINUX/UNIX experience, microbiome/metagenomic specific bioinformatics applications, microbial genome analysis, R-based programming
