Assistant Athletic Trainer - Athletics

Classification Title: Athletic Trainer I

Classification Salary Range: $3,821 - $7,374 per month.

About the Position:

Under general supervision of the Athletics Director; California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) member. The Athletic Trainer will directly assist the Head Athletic Trainer with day to day processes, pre-game and pre-practice preventative taping and rehabilitation; post-game and post-practice therapy and rehabilitation; inventory maintenance and assist with the determination of supply and equipment needs; assist with the execution of blood-borne pathogen safety procedures and proper disposal of waste; assist in the administration of stretching and massage therapy; exercises direct and professional verbal and written communications skills with student-athletes, coaches, administrators, doctors, parents, and others as needed.

Travel, evening and weekend work.

Valid Driver License, CPR certification, BOC, and National Athletic Trainer's Association (NATA) certification.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assisting the Head Athletic Trainer with day-to-day processes
  • Performs preventative treatment and rehabilitation of student-athlete injuries
  • Oversee Training Room; keeps an accurate inventory of all supplies and equipment utilized in the training room.
  • Injury Prevention and Care of Student-Athletes. Attends athletic contests and special events.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge:
    General knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation; full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment; rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses' governing national collegiate athletic associations (e.g., National Collegiate Athletics Association or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) pertaining to student athletes. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens; Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards.
  • Abilities:
    Ability to effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions; and work in an environment with competing priorities. Incumbents must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians and other health professionals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:
    Equivalent to bachelor's degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.

    One (1) year of athletics training experience. Current CPR and first aid certification and athletic training experience in an intercollegiate environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of: The principles, methods, and techniques related to athletic training - the materials, supplies, and equipment utilized in the prevention and treatment of intercollegiate athletic injuries - following insurance procedures; general knowledge of the methods and problems of Athletics and Athletic Training; and general knowledge of the principles of individual student-athlete and team behavior.
