Instructional Design Librarian

Summary

Under the direction of the Law Library Director and the Associate Director, this staff member will be primarily responsible for instructional design support for the College of Law. This staff member will support the instructional design needs of the College of Law using Canvas, TWEN, and other learning management systems that the College of Law may adopt. This staff member will also advise and support faculty seeking assistance with course design theory and application in classroom and online teaching.

This staff member will also serve as a Reference Librarian supporting the research and reference needs of the STU Law community.

Essential Functions

To be a productive member of the Law Library Team, and as an important member of the team, this staff member will perform whatever task or function required to meet the evolving needs of the College of Law community including students, faculty, and patrons. Team members will be readily available and visible to students, faculty, and patrons. Every effort will be made to answer patron inquiries. If unable to answer an inquiry, the team member will ensure that the customer is assisted by another member of the Law Library team or staff.

Instructional Design responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the Law Library Director and Associate Director, oversee the deployment, operations, and use of Canvas for the College of Law including providing first-line troubleshooting in coordination with University Information Technology.
  • Support the College of Law Faculty in their use of the Canvas platform including providing advice, training, and direct support with course design and use of assessment tools.
  • Create and deliver a wide range of information literacy services to students and faculty, including classroom teaching, via I-MS systems such as Canvas and TWEN courses, and individualized training.
  • Consults with faculty and students to identify, evaluate, and recommend relevant instructional information technology for use and purchase, using present and emerging information and technologies.
  • Promotes instruction design resources and services to College of Law faculty; maintain up-to-date knowledge of techniques for assessing the impact of technology use on teaching and learning.
  • Design, implement, experiment with, integrate, and assess library/informationliteracy-related online learning modules, tutorials, and other digital learning objects and experiences that develop students' knowledge of and expertise in law library resources, enhance learners' research skills, and support active, effective, and equitable online learning experiences to the College of Law community.
  • Gather data to help assess the quality and impact of online instruction services, in collaboration with the Law Library's Administration, and raise awareness and increase use of library services and resources among the STU Law student including those who may take advantage of hybrid and/or remote course options.
  • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials and teaching strategies.
Reference
  • Participates in general Reference & Research services as part of regular workflow, including regular shifts at the reference desk.
  • Provide outreach support to the STU Law community, including providing classroom research training and lectures as requested by the College of Law faculty and the Law Library Director.
Other Duties
  • Engage in and contribute to the profession through continuing learning, service, research, presentations, or professional communications.
  • Represent the Law Library in local, regional and national meetings as requested.
  • Serve on University and/or Law School Committees and participate in University and Law School events as requested.
  • Keep informed of new trends in access services and the law profession.
  • Recommend materials and services to Library Administration based upon current trends in use amongst faculty and students.
Competencies
  • Strong understanding of instructional design theory and methodology.
  • Strong and effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with students and faculty from a wide diversity of background and educational experiences.
  • Organizational, planning, and administrative skills including the ability to work effectively on broad as well as detailed projects.
  • Ability to work in a network environment including working with an integrated library system.
  • Knowledge and ability to work with legal databases and common law school and educational technologies, and the ability to design library instructional tools.
  • Strong technical skills, interest in technology, and the ability to troubleshoot simple technology problems, failures, or deficiencies- expertise with law school technologies such as TWEN, Lexis Classroom, Canvas, is essential.
  • Ability to understand library system technology that can be used to improve services, instruction efforts and workflows.
  • Strong service orientation and effective problem-solving skills.
  • Be flexible with work assignments and work hours.
Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have supervisory responsibility, it may assist the Access Services Librarian in the direction and training of the law library assistants assigned to the Circulation Department and may supervise Law Library research assistants.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; push library carts full of books; climb on stands to shelf books. The employee must occasionally lift of move library materials and supplies, up to 30 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position occasionally requires schedule changes with weekend/evening hours.

Travel

Travel is primarily for Professional Development. The employee will be asked to represent the Law Library in local, regional, and national meetings as requested by the Library Director.

Required Education and Experience

MLS. from an A.L.A. accredited library school program.

Formal education in Instructional Design concepts and theory or one or more years of experience with Instructional Design (additional experience may compensate for lack of formal education).

Previous law library or legal research experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

J.D. from an accredited ABA institution is strongly preferred.

Tuition Benefit

After 1 year of continuous full‐time service, employees are eligible to enroll in STU’s bachelor and master courses, tuition‐free. The program will cover a maximum timeframe of 125% of credit hours attempted toward the degree program. Employees may enroll in STU’s doctoral program, with a 40% tuition discount, under the same conditions.
