Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), one of the nation’s top technological research universities, invites nominations and applications for the position of the Fred and June Kummer Endowed Department Chair of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering (EMSE).

Position Description

The EMSE Department seeks an exceptionally qualified leader with proven skills and experience commensurate with the academic management duties of a department chair. The candidate is required to have a strong publication record; demonstrated leadership skills to advance Missouri S&T toward R1 Carnegie University Classification status through research growth; evidence of effective teaching and commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level; experience conducting and fostering interdisciplinary research/education; and experience leading and mentoring students, staff, and faculty.

As a Kummer Endowed Department Chair, the selected candidate will fulfill the required role of Kummer Endowed Chairs as outlined in https://kummerinstitute.mst.edu . The Kummer Institute was recently established through a $300 million transformative gift that will cultivate leadership and technological innovation, nurture an entrepreneurial mindset, foster expansion of academic-industry partnerships to address the emerging needs of industry, and create economic growth for the region, state, and nation.

About the EMSE Department

The department offers ABET accredited BS, and MS, and PhD Degrees in Engineering Management and MS and PhD degrees in Systems Engineering and is solely housed in the Engineering Management Building, with available lab, office, and classroom space. The department maintains an active research program with recent grants from funding sources such as NSF, NIH, USDOE, USDoD, USDOT, and The Boeing Company. Missouri S&T is located in Rolla, Missouri, and offers abundant outdoor recreational opportunities and easy access to metropolitan areas and the beautiful Ozark Mountain region. Minimum Qualifications
  • An earned doctoral degree in Systems Engineering or Industrial Engineering or Engineering Management or in a related discipline from an accredited university
  • Academic credentials commensurate with appointment as a tenured full professor
Preferred Qualifications
  • An internationally recognized reputation in Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, Industrial Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Extensive experience in building and funding a strong research program with large research grants and high-quality journal publications, as well as teaching experience in the industrial engineering, systems engineering or engineering management areas
  • Experience and knowledge in ABET/EAC accreditation of undergraduate programs
  • A strong record of research funding from a variety of organization/agency sources
  • A willingness to travel for the benefit of the department, including alumni development and industry outreach
  • Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills and an ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting
  • Demonstrated excellence in mentoring and supporting faculty in their research and teaching activities
  • A record of successful budgetary and personnel management
  • Ability to represent the department in both academic and industry research settings
  • A demonstrated record of ethical performance
  • Demonstrated ability to set clear and consistent strategies and vision for future growth
  • Leadership and commitment to student learning success including proven ideas to increase student enrollment and graduation success
  • A demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion
