Job Description
The HPC System Administrators in ASU Research Computing are entrusted with finding and supporting solutions for some of the most challenging problems at the University. As a System Administrator in RC, you will provide support and maintenance for the HPC clusters and work directly with researchers to provide hardware and software support. This will be a challenging but rewarding role and requires expertise in many different technologies ranging from physical system troubleshooting to Linux system administration, networking, software builds, and virtualization.

$58,824 - $81,700 per year; DOE

Essential Duties
- Work with researchers on hardware and software issues, during office hours or via support tickets.
- Working with vendors to resolve hardware issues as they arise in the data center.
- Participate in the rotating on-call schedule (after hours emergencies and tickets).
- Creating scripts, adding automation as needed
- Documenting new processes, updating documentation as needed
- Maintain operating systems, security updates, and upgrades (we primarily run Centos 7 or Rocky 8, and use Ansible / Salt).
- Monitoring of systems, fixing issues as they arise.
- Provisioning virtual machines
- Provisioning storage.
- Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Document processes
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Technology or related field AND two (2) years experience providing information technology services; OR, Six (6) years experience providing information technology services; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Certificates from recognized programs that indicate mastery of tools and techniques relevant to the assignment may substitute for up to six months experience.

- Scripting languages (bash, python, perl, awk)

- Monitoring and alerting stacks (Prometheus, Nagios, Icinga)
- Networking (Ethernet / Infiniband)
- Logging tools (Elasticsearch, Syslog)
- Dashboarding (Grafana, Kibana)
- Hypervisors (Xenserver)
- Openstack
- Containers (Apptainer, K8s, Docker)
- Version control and Git (Gitlab, GitHub)
- Databases (MariaDB, MongoDB, MySQL)
- Storage (Isilon, CEPH, Qumulo, Powerstore, BeeGFS, ISCSI/block storage)
- Physical hardware (troubleshooting/mounting/fixing server equipment)
Working Environment
Some activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.

Hybrid work is an arrangement where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.

Datacenter
- Certain activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of standing and keyboarding between working with server equipment
- Exposure to loud noises (ear protection provided and strongly encouraged), high and low temperatures, strong cooling-fan-induced wind
- Performing non-keyboard tasks require bending, stooping, kneeling, prolonged standing, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus/within the Data Center.
Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, calculator, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
- Work laptop will be provided
- Technology use plan includes partial personal Cellular-plan reimbursement
Occasional use of tools and machinery required by the position.
Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
Occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds.
