Purpose of Position

The School of the Arts at Northern Kentucky University offers a wide array of degree programs in the visual and performing arts. The Music Program within the School of the Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences offers a BME in Music Education (Choral/Vocal and Instrumental), BM in Performance (Instrumental, Jazz Studies, Piano Pedagogy, and Voice) a BM in Composition (Traditional and Commercial Music/Audio Production, BA in Music (Liberal Studies), Music Minor, and Audio Production Minor. Primary Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities will be to provide leadership for the NKU band program, which includes conducting the Symphonic Winds and Concert Band, while recruiting and maintaining appropriate instrumentation for a balanced band program. Primary teaching duties will include instrumental conducting and other secondary teaching areas (based on the candidate’s strengths) that could include methods courses (brass, woodwinds, and/or marching band techniques), applied music, instrumentation and scoring, music theory, etc. Responsibilities also include the development of a scholarly/creative agenda in research, performance, and/or professional creative activities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Doctoral degree in music required (Ph.D., DMA, etc.). ABD candidates will be considered, but the doctoral degree must be conferred by August 2023.
2. Teaching experience at the college level.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Evidence of potential for a successful career in teaching.
2. Successful experience leading a band program and mentoring student conductors.
3. Record of excellence in performance/research and professional creative activity.
4. Experience working with students of diverse backgrounds, abilities, learning styles, and goals.
5. Demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining students.
6. Experience and/or potential for cultivating positive and collaborative relationships with others, especially area K-12 schools including area band directors, music teachers, faculty, students, etc.
7. Ability to teach in a secondary area, which may include methods courses (brass, woodwinds, and/or marching band techniques), applied music, instrumentation and scoring, music theory, etc.
8. Strong organizational and communication skills to support the operation of a growing band and music program.
9. Candidates who have additional positive attributes/expertise/skills beyond the above qualifications are desirable and should reference these additional attributes in application materials.
