Position Summary

Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity

    Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students of San Diego State University through a wide range of programs and services. Care is provided by board certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners and other medical staff including nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists. In addition to the basic medical care, Student Health Services offers health education, orthopedics, osteopathic manipulative treatment and psychiatry.

    The mission of SDSU Student Health Services is to provide high-quality, convenient, student- focused medical care in a safe and welcoming environment, actively partnering with our student- patients to help them achieve and maintain healthy lives in support of their personal and academic success.

    The Clinical Lab Scientist I position within Student Health Services, under the direction of the Laboratory and Radiology Manager or designee, conducts a variety of clinical laboratory tests which provide the medical staff with the necessary data for the detection, diagnosis and treatment of various diseases and other conditions found in a Student Health Center setting. This team member serves as the Lead CLS and, in collaboration with the Laboratory and Radiology Manager, provides work direction to other team members in the laboratory, manages patient and test flow, facilitates daily quality assurance checks, and troubleshoots equipment or testing issues.

    This position is a part-time, (.75 time-base) benefits-eligible temporary position anticipated to end on July 31, 2023, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

    This appointment is for an 11/12 pay-plan position. The incumbent works 11 months per year and is paid over 12 months, with July 2023 as the anticipated off month.

    This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

    Education and Experience
    • Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent from an accredited institution or equivalent post-secondary education, training and experience as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities
    • Two years of progressively responsible administrative and technical work within a clinical laboratory

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience serving as a lead or supervisor within a laboratory setting
    • Laboratory “generalist” with 3-5 years of experience is preferred.
    • Recent (past three years) phlebotomy experience
    • Experience working in a college campus health services laboratory.
    • Experience with policy and procedure development and accreditation or inspection readiness

    Licenses and/or Certifications Required
    • Must possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license

    Compensation and Benefits

    Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,500 per month.

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,682 - $9,038 per month.

    SDSU Vaccine Policy

    In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

    The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
